Daniel Cameron, a former general counsel for Sen. Mitch McConnell, has entered the race for Kentucky Attorney General. He is a Republican. He is also black.

On Tuesday, Cameron announced he had received an endorsement from President Trump.

Louisville, Kentucky civil rights attorney Dawn Elliott, who is black, has a big problem with that. She also co-hosts a liberal radio talk show, WLOU 1350 AM.

On her radio show, Elliott said, “Cameron needs to stop eating the ‘coon flakes’ the White House is serving.”

She added, “To sit there and be so proud of someone who is an open racist is shameful. Why would anyone of color want to side with someone who is trying to destroy us?”

Black unemployment has reached it’s lowest level and Trump recently signed criminal justice reform into law. What have the Democrats done for you lately?

Who’s the racist here? If a white person had said that, their career would be over.

According to the local newspaper, the Courier Journal, Elliott refuses to back down. She said the association with Trump is a slap in the face to African Americans and that Cameron needs to explain his position to black voters.

The paper reports that Kentucky Republicans are standing behind Cameron.

Sarah Van Wallaghen, the state GOP’s executive director, said, “Liberals will stop at nothing to attack anyone and everyone who dares to think for themselves.”

On Wednesday, Cameron struck back at Elliott by tweet:

Apparently, the race has already turned ugly. It’s already devolved into personal attacks and negative ads.

CNN contributor Scott Jennings, who lives in Kentucky and is a Cameron supporter, tweeted that someone put Cameron’s face on “WANTED” posters at a local picnic. Also, his Democratic opponent, Greg Stumbo, a 61-year-old white man, called him a “child” in his speech … or BOY, if you will.

Surprisingly, Kentucky has not had a Republican attorney general since World War II. Nor has an African-American ever held the seat.

And Republicans in the state are excited about Cameron. In fact, during this election cycle, “GOP voters have nominated three non-white candidates for statewide office, while Democrats have nominated none.”

Van Wallaghen said, “Kentucky Republicans are proud of our record of diversity and inclusion,”

Raashaan Myers, a local sports radio host, who is both black and a Democrat, said he “is keeping an open mind” about Cameron. However, he did say that, “most black voters will be turned off by the Trump connection.” As for himself:

Anytime you can have a first and have an African American have an opportunity to do something new, it’s motivating and I love it. You can still be excited for Daniel whether Donald Trump likes him or doesn’t like him. I’m not going to allow Trump to tell me who I should or shouldn’t support.

Trump received only 8% of the black vote in 2016. I wouldn’t be surprised that number increases in 2020.

The Trump team will reach out to blacks voters in 2020. He will ask them what the Democrats have ever done for them. For decades, Democrats have taken the black vote for granted. If Trump can make them see that Democrats do nothing but promote policies which keep them in cycles of poverty, he may be able to attract more support from this demographic.

Michael Steele, the not-so-conservative former chairman of the RNC, was asked for a comment about Cameron’s candidacy. Naturally, he brought up Trump’s remarks following the August 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA, which were taken wildly out of context. And I’m sure Steele is aware of that.

He told Politico “it will be hard for black voters to overlook Trump’s multiple comments around race.” Not if you tell them the truth Michael.
