There’s a reason why a San Diego Union-Tribune article, written by reporters Susan Schroder and Elizabeth Aguilera, covering the November 2013 use of pepper spray by Obama border control agents is currently being referenced repeatedly. Apparently, the incident was covered very few other media outlets.
Aside from the Union-Tribune, it was covered by NBC San Diego, KPBS, which is the University of San Diego’s radio station and the San Diego Reader. Unbelievable, but true. We’re only hearing about it now because the same thing has happened again, the only difference being the president in office at the time.
I came across a post published yesterday on the Daily Kos entitled “No, Obama Agents Didn’t Do The Same Thing In 2013” written by JPolon. He considers the comparisons to the 2013 incident to be “RWNM bulls*%&.” (Right Wing Noise Machine – I had to look it up!) He explains why:
Here’s the thing, it was not the same at all. Shocking, I know. In 2013, there was a planned attack, www.nbcsandiego.com/…. As you can see in the video, the group consisted of all men and they threw rocks and bottles. The migrants yesterday were families, women, children. Not the same thing.
I just don’t get it. They have been screaming at us about this “invasion” for weeks. They will keep them out like Obama didn’t. Then the migrants get tear gassed by the border patrol. And they say it’s nothing to worry about and Obama did it too. My brain is about to explode!
Well, here’s the thing JPolon. None of what you just wrote matters. At all.
In each case, a group of around 100 migrants threw rocks at US Border Patrol Agents and tried to rush the border. And in each case, US Border Patrol Agents reacted similarly.
Yes, there were women and children in the 2018 group of migrants, estimated at roughly 20%, as opposed to the 2013 group which was comprised only of men. These men cowardly tried to use the women and children as human shields hoping that agents would hesitate before using tear gas. The women all knew what the possibilities were and made the decision to participate anyway. And their foolish decisions to involve children was entirely their own.
President Trump spoke last night about the possibility that some of the children in the group did not even belong to the migrants who tried to rush the border. He called them “migrant grabbers.” He said:
These are people, they call ’em grabbers. They grab a child because they think they’ll have a certain status by having a child. Some migrants traveled with minors because they felt it gave them better chances of successfully entering the United States.
When you know there’s going to be potential violence, you know there’s going to be tear gas or something, you don’t take your child and bring them there.
I can say that all over the border you have a lot of grabbers, you have a lot of people that grab children and they have no idea who these children are. They’re not parents. They have no idea. And frankly, to release the children to these people is a disaster.
With the help of the mainstream media, who posted the now famous, staged photograph of a woman and two children running away from the tear gas everywhere, these migrants are being portrayed as victims. The same media which failed to report the 2013 use of pepper spray by Obama’s agents, are covering this “tragedy” and as always, it’s Donald Trump’s fault.
Memo to JPolon: Comparisons to the 2013 are not RWNM Bulls$@#. They are entirely appropriate. You are just in such denial that your “brain is about to explode!”
If only it would.
