Late Friday afternoon, I received a “pleasant” surprise in the mail.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland informed me that, like tens of millions of Americans, my insurance will be terminated next year due to Obamacare.

My wife and I were very happy with this plan.  Given that I work in politics fighting for limited government and electing citizen legislators instead of working at K Street, I don’t have employer-provided health insurance.  So we shopped around in the remaining free market that exists in health insurance (even before Obamacare, government regulations and mandates have killed the insurance market), and actually found a high deductible plan that met the needs of our family.  The premiums were roughly $450 a month.

Over the years, my wife has always listened to me on the radio, read my writings, and listened to engaged in my animated discussions about policy issues.  She has always shared the same values, but it wasn’t until Friday that it really hit home with her.  Looking at the Blue Cross letter, she said, “wow, this is not just abstract. This is real.”

Now we will have to spend thousands more in annual premiums until the system collapses shortly thereafter.

Undoubtedly, there are millions of us who find ourselves in the same predicament.  This is unlike any other policy issue.  Over the past few months, Americans across the country have been receiving these letters either from insurance companies or from their employers.  This is not some abstract debate over agriculture policy or the Federal Reserve.  This is something that is hitting everyone – Democrats, independents, Republicans, and those who are apolitical – more than any policy issue in generations.

This is the one issue that transcends partisan lines outside of Washington.  Had we merited the existence of a solid opposition party united behind a message of how Obamacare is permanently destroying the middle class, we could have gone to the brink and won.  But, alas, we have an opposition party in the House that was dragged into this fight kicking and screaming, and has been messaging everything other than Obamacare.  We have an opposition party in the Senate led by Mitch McConnell sabotaging our messaging from day one.  At present, Mitch McConnell and his compatriots are standing shoulder to shoulder with Obama and Harry Reid trashing House conservatives.  While Americans are being thrown off their health insurance and facing the prospect of paying thousands more each year, Republican “leaders” are concerned about maintaining the sequester.

As I noted at the beginning of the confrontation, we were doomed to fail because we were fighting with both hands tied and a knife in our backs.  Although we represent the overwhelming majority of the grassroots in this party, we comprise just a tiny portion of the elected Republicans in Washington.  Democrats know this too.  That’s why they confidently waited this out until the party barons would reassert control over the tea party.

And speaking of the schism between the grassroots and the Wall Street/K Street Republicans, there is a very simple factor engendering the divide.  Most grassroots conservatives are not wealthy, and they certainly never got rich off of political power.  Paying up to $10,000 more a year for health insurance really hurts us.  “It’s not just abstract; it’s real.”

The power brokers, on the other hand, have too much money and too little foresight to care about the effects of Obamacare.  Quite the contrary, they sabotaged the fight against Obamacare because they are only concerned about the tantrums of the stock market.  They have come to peace with Obamacare and other pernicious forms of government intervention.  In fact, they usually find ways to earn money off of statism.  Mitch McConnell was still able to raise $2.3 million this quarter.  It’s what Jim DeMint has often referred to as ‘venture socialism.’

Even if Obamacare is here to stay, the sun will still come up the next day for these people.  The inside-the-beltway thumb-sucking “conservative” pundits will still get paid oversized salaries to pontificate about the political effects of Obamacare.  They’ll make more than enough money to cover the cost of the premiums.  To them, this is just another day at the office; another political battle – one which is not worth risking any political capital.

Fellow patriots, this is not the country for which our forefathers bled at Gettysburg.  This is not the country for which our grandparents stormed the beaches of Normandy.  Fortunately, we don’t have to shed blood for this battle.  We merely need men and women who are willing to stand up to the psychotic narcissists in the political class.  We need state legislatures, private businesses, doctors, and groups of citizens to unite and say NO.

We’ve allowed so many unconstitutional, harmful, and selfish laws go through without putting up a fight.

This is one part of our lives that must not be surrendered to Washington.

This is one issue we must never concede.  We must continue disrupting this cancer on all fronts, especially in the states.  And most importantly, we must throw out the career politicians in both parties next year.  It’s time we make them live in the world they seek to destroy.  It’s time we make them understand that government tyranny is not just an abstract concern.  It is real.
