There is lots of chatter out there about the Democrats ruining their chances in 2020 by continuing this sham investigation, inquiry, witch hunt, farce, remake of the Beach Scene in The Lord of the Flies. To a certain degree, the pundits are correct. This show trial might be motivating their base—it surely is Trump’s, but it’s certainly not getting any traction with the persuadable voters in the center, who just want to see results.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee predicted on “Fox & Friends” that the ongoing talks of impeachment will lead to the “landslide reelection” of President Donald Trump in 2020 because Democrats have not been focused on the “real issues.”
That is true and here’s why: Like it or not, the President of these United States gets all the credit and all the blame when things go right or they go wrong. Them’s the rules, folks. Bill Clinton still gets/takes credit for a balanced budget…a budget provided to him by Newt Gingrich and the Republican “Contract With America.” That’s the way it works.
President Trump gets the blame for increasing deficits and an increasing debt. He’s also getting the blame for not building “The Wall.” The fact that there has been a downright hostile Congress, Press, and private special interests opposing him and instituting lawfare against his every action, is irrelevant. Donald J. Trump is the President of these United States—he gets the blame.
On the other hand, he’s also getting credit. He’s getting credit for a flat out, booming economy. Millions of new jobs created. Lowest unemployment in 5 decades…FIFTY YEARS! Lowest Black and Hispanic unemployment ever recorded. These United States are now collectively, the World’s largest energy producer.
These hot economic numbers aren’t the only story. President Trump put his considerable influence behind a bipartisan Prison/Sentencing Reform measure. The measure which passed certainly doesn’t hurt his chances with persuadable Black and Hispanic voters—and that, my friends, has the Democrats absolutely terrified.
President Trump, with his tax and regulatory policies, has visibly raised the economic and social mobility prospects of both Blacks and Hispanics. Remember those Blacks (and Hispanics) who then-Candidate Trump asked, “What do you have to lose?” Given current economic stats, bolstered by steadily increasing poll numbers, Democrats can see the writing on the wall. Those Black and Hispanic voters who took a chance and flipped the lever for Donald J. Trump in 2016, are going to be back to flip the lever for him again in 2020–this time bringing more than a few friends.
The Democrats are caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. If the Democrats had cooperated with President Trump on Immigration Reform, where he offered them huge compromises—or on the US-Canada-Mexico trade agreement, coupled with his performance thus far, a landslide in 2020 would have been pretty much assured. Rather than cooperate on anything that might accrue to Trump’s political credit, the Democrats needed to do something to deflect. The path they’ve chosen, as Governor Huckabee points out, will lead to a landslide. Landslide or landslide, take your pick. The Democrats are in a very bad place.
