Last night, I had the great honor to host Red State’s Live Blog of the “Democrats for Trump,” event in Detroit…at least that’s what it ended up being. More on that in a bit. First of all, the really important stuff. Our contest winner last night, for coming closest to accurately predicting the number of times “misogynist/sexist,” was used, is second-time winner, nathankarlen. One more win, and he will achieve the highly coveted Triple Crown of Red State debate predictions. This honor also comes with the grand prize of being mentioned in one of my columns. Congratulations! Now, on to the debate analysis.

I won’t go into winners and losers (amongst the Democrats). My colleague Joe Cunningham has already and most ably done so here. However, I will claim a winner: President Donald J. Trump. Throughout the entire evening, Democrats would tear into each other on such things as whether or not ObamaCare—-remember that signature achievement of the Obama Era? Then stop to remind us/them of “who the enemy is.”

They also sparred over law enforcement and incarceration, where Tulsi Gabbard had what is now being touted as a breakout moment. She absolutely scorched Kamala Harris for jailing pot smokers, while chuckling abut doing doobies herself; for keeping folks in jail past their sentences—for the free state labor, and worst of all, failing to disclose exonerating information that would have freed folks wrongfully convicted.

The best explanation of why the President won last night (aside from the optics of internecine warfare on stage) comes from one of our reader comments. SeanDuncan64 writes (emphasis mine)

So let me get this straight – these folks want to cut fair trade deals using tariffs to protect our sovereignty (Gabbard). They want to get rid of that nasty Obamacare (several). They want to improve the pay and employment for minorities (all of them). They want out of Afghanistan and reinvest the money in making America great again (Gabbard, or all of them?). They want a saner criminal justice system (all of them?). And some of them even want merit-based immigration (Yang).

Are they debating for the Dem primaries, or to see which of them gets to be on Trump’s reelection campaign staff?

Spot on. Optics were bad enough. But the substance that all of them were promoting in one way or another, sounded like Donald J. Trump. Deep down inside, I think they knew that. After each little dustup between the candidates, somebody onstage tried to remind the audience (or maybe themselves) that It’s President Trump they need to be criticizing. All in all, a pretty good night for the President.

On a side note, we did get a few pretty funny comments from our readers. Treksdot wins the award (especially for that killer line 3) for making your humble scribe spew a perfectly good mouthful of single malt onto my keyboard & screen. Again, emphasis mine.

Things I’d rather be doing:
1. Mowing the lawn with nothing but a pair of kid’s safety scissors.
2. Selling life insurance to people at the old folk’s home.
3. Shaving all the hair off my head and stapling a still living raccoon to my skull.

That’s my short take on last night’s event. More to follow on specific issues…not to mention, we’re about due for a tweet from POTUS that will send the Democrats into a tizzy once again.

Thanks to all who participated.
