On Saturday, President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of Devin Nunes, the CEO of Truth Social, to serve as Chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board. The announcement was made on Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, where Nunes serves as CEO. In the post, Trump confirmed that Nunes would continue to hold his leadership position as CEO and Director of Trump Media and Technology Group while taking on the new role.

Trump wrote:

I am pleased to announce that I will appoint Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes as Chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, which consists of distinguished citizens from outside of the Federal Government. While continuing his leadership of Trump Media & Technology Group, Devin will draw on his experience as former Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and his key role in exposing the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, to provide me with independent assessments of the effectiveness and propriety of the U.S. Intelligence Community’s activities. Congratulations Devin!

Nunes is a former Congressman who served as a Republican representative for California's 22nd Congressional District from 2003 to 2022. During his tenure in Congress, Nunes chaired the House Intelligence Committee, where he became a prominent defender of President Trump during the investigation into the "Russian collusion" hoax after the 2016 presidential election.

More recently, Nunes allied with Trump during the FBI's raid of Mar-a-Lago. He described it as another example of the Democratic Party's attempt to politically target and "destroy" Trump. Nunes successfully predicted Trump's federal indictment and criticized the Justice Department for "slow-rolling" evidence in an effort to manipulate public perception.

Late last month, Nunes released a statement congratulating Kash Patel, Trump's nominee to lead the FBI, writing:

An immensely talented lawyer and investigator with an unimpeachable devotion to our Constitution, Kash is a brilliant pick to serve as Director of the FBI. Kash and I worked closely together to expose the saboteurs within the Intelligence Community who perpetuated the Russia collusion hoax. Based on that experience, along with his service in key positions in the first Trump Administration, I know Kash has the intelligence and fearlessness to expose the corruption in the FBI, reverse its damaging politicization, and restore Americans’ confidence in the Bureau’s basic honesty. Those who denounce the darkness at the FBI can now rest assured that light will soon shine through.

After recognizing the need for an independent group to provide unbiased assessments of U.S. intelligence operations, the board was established in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was originally named the President’s Board of Consultants on Foreign Intelligence Activities.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy renamed it the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB), and it has been a key advisory body for every president since—except for President Carter, who disbanded the Board in 1977. President Reagan reinstated the PFIAB in 1981, and in 2008, President Bush rebranded it as the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.

Board members are appointed by the president and are generally experts in areas such as national security, law, intelligence, military affairs, and public policy.
