Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is recovering after a dramatic fall on Friday, as previously reported.
Pelosi, 84, was hospitalized after sustaining an injury while traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation. Pelosi was in Luxembourg to attend events marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, one of the most significant engagements of World War II on the Western Front.
According to her spokesperson, Ian Krager, Pelosi is receiving "excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals" and is expected to recover. However, she will not be able to attend the remaining engagements of the congressional delegation.
As new details emerge, sources familiar with the situation told The New York Times that the fall took place at the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of Luxembourg's grand duke. Two anonymous sources close to Pelosi confirmed that she fractured her hip in a "hard fall" while descending a marble staircase. While the injury is serious, sources say Pelosi's doctors believe surgery can repair it. It remains unclear whether this procedure will take place in Luxembourg or upon her return to the United States.
Pelosi's spokesperson did not divulge further details on the severity of the injury but stated:
She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our service members during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation's history. Speaker Emerita Pelosi conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.
Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II — including her uncle, Johnny. She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.
After stepping down from her Speakership last year, Pelosi was reelected to her 20th term in Congress in November. Despite her age, Pelosi is often seen navigating in 4-inch stiletto high heels.
She is pictured wearing a pair of black stilettos in a group photograph of the delegation taken at the palace and released on Friday by the House of the Grand Duke. Notably, Pelosi is seen grasping a Congressman's hand in the photograph, taken in front of a staircase.

Pelosi's ability to maneuver goes far beyond her choice of footwear; it lies in her profound influence on shaping the Democratic Party. She played a critical role in quietly but effectively pushing President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election.
More recently, Pelosi has been actively working to thwart Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) bid to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, favoring Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) instead. While Pelosi’s injury may leave her physically sidelined for now, her power within the Democratic Party remains formidable.
