While former President Donald Trump was the intended target of an assassination attempt at his Butler, Pennsylvania, rally on Saturday, we know that at least one attendee was murdered, and two others are in critical condition. As many Americans have been holding the loved ones of the deceased in their prayers, we now know the identity of the victim of this senseless violence.
A former volunteer fire Chief for Buffalo Township, Corey Comperatore, age 50, lost his life after being struck with a bullet shot by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. According to his sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, Corey was hit as he shielded his daughters from the gunfire that ensued just minutes into Trump's speech.
On Facebook, Comperatore Schafer wrote:
The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable. My baby brother just turned 50 and had so much life left to experience. Hatred has no limits and love has no bounds. Pray for my sister-in-law, nieces, my mother, sister, me and his nieces and nephews as this feels like a terrible nightmare but we know it is our painful reality.
In an early morning post on Sunday, former President Trump sent his condolences to the victim's family, writing:
Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.
In a separate statement, former First Lady Melania Trump offered her sympathies for the victims and their families, writing:
To the families of the innocent victims now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy. Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) identified the victim and said Comperatore "died a hero."
Speaking of Comperatore's heroic actions, Shapiro said:
His wife shared with me that he dove on his family to protect them.
Memorials have begun to circulate on social media, reiterating the sentiments of Comperatore as an American hero.
The man who died in the crowd yesterday has been identified as Corey Comperatore.
