J.K. Rowling, author of the popular Harry Potter series, has been an outspoken critic of transgender ideology and activism, saying it aims to erode the definition of legal sex and replace it with gender. In the past, left-wing progressives have called to "cancel" Rowling for her non-compliance with their ideologies and compelled speech. Now, Rowling, age 58, has been reported to the UK police.

In a series of X (formerly Twitter) posts made on Sunday, Rowling called the UK's first transgender newscaster, India Willoughby, born as Jonathon Willoughby, a "man."

Rowling wrote that Willoughby is:

... just a man reveling in his misogynistic performance of what he thinks ‘woman’ means: narcissistic, shallow and exhibitionist.

In an interview, Willoughby, also age 58, claims this "misgendering" is a "cut and dry offense," saying that Rowling had "definitely committed a crime." The pair have been involved in online spats previously.

Willoughby said:

I'm legally a woman, she knows I’m a woman, and she calls me a man. It’s a protected characteristic and that is a breach of both the Equalities Act and the Gender Recognition Act. She’s tweeted that out to 14 million followers.

Willoughby stated that he contacted Northumbria Constabulary to report the posts made by Rowling, saying:

I don’t know if it’s going to be treated as a hate crime, malicious communications, but it’s a cut-and-dry offence as far as I’m concerned.

In response to the allegations made in the interview published on Wednesday, Rowling defended her right to free speech under British law and suggested that Willoughby's "obsessive"  targeting of her constituted defamation and harassment.

She also wrote:

'Man' is not a slur. I know a lot of you think the UN should intervene whenever women bruise your egos, but there is no human right to universal validation.

It appears that Rowling will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation but will not comply with compelled speech or re-writing of biology. Rowling wrote:

Aware as I am that it's an offence to lie to law enforcement, I'll simply have to explain to the police that, in my view, India is a classic example of the male narcissist who lives in a state of perpetual rage that he can't compel women to take him at his own valuation

Rowling stated in 2023 that she would choose jail time over conceding that gender is not a biological trait determined at birth.
