Take Napoleon's Advice and Apply It to the Left

In my last VIP article, I wrote that the primary aim of the culture war isn't to try to make things more conservative, but instead, to fight back against the sterility that varying groups try to enforce on culture, especially through corporations.

I strongly advise you to read that article before continuing on with this one, because it'll help with context.

One question that would inevitably arise from that previous article would be "Well then, what do we do with the left?"  Conservatives fight leftism. It's what we do. It's what we've always done.

I think that kind of thinking is, ultimately, a mistake. A conservative's — or, at least an American conservative's — greatest enemy is cultural entropy, not the left. While the left does tend to drive us toward that brand of collapse, it's pretty obvious that when it's dragged onto a stage where the fight is fair, they lose handily.

I've been saying this for years now. The left's "message" can only survive in a bubble. For a very long time, that bubble was large and impenetrable, thanks to its occupying and owning the big stages. News, movies, awards, scientific organizations, and especially governmental departments were, and largely still are, infected with leftism. It was very easy for them to get their message onto your screens and speakers, and keep out everyone else's.

That changed wildly very recently. Donald Trump is clearing out a lot of the waste and filth in government, and Elon Musk's creation of X from Twitter has more or less evened the odds. Market forces punishing woke entertainment relentlessly have had many studios backing away from DEI-based creation, though the leftover infection is still largely an issue... for now.

The left's hold over the culture has taken a huge hit, and it's put it on a stage where it has to compete with the right in front of everyone.

And you can see how much the left hates that, because it loses far more battles than it wins on the narrative front.

The funny thing is, if you watch the cultural flailing of the left, you'll notice that its worst enemy isn't actually conservatives, it's itself. Outside its bubble, where it has to weigh its ideas against everyone else's, it often looks stupid, controlling, and out of touch. Every time Gavin Newsom posts something from his account meant to compete with Trump's social media team, he looks more and more ridiculous. It appears too try-hard and lacks imagination. Meanwhile, Trump's social media team makes posts that resonate with people as easily as breathing is for you.

The main magic of the "Libs of TikTok" account is that it just takes posts by leftists and puts them on other platforms, effectively amplifying the leftists so that everyone can see what they're like without a filter.

The left's strategy to win has always been censorship and oppression of the enemy's ability to get their message out.

The conservative strategy should be the opposite. Allow the enemy to speak out and freely. Amplify them when it's beneficial. Let their ideas, attitudes, and narratives sit freely in the open where they can be observed, scrutinized, and openly argued against.

One of Napoleon's most famous strategies was summed up by him in a pithy statement: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."

The left makes mistakes all the time; they were just well hidden thanks to strict narrative control. That's no longer the case. We should allow them to say what they want to say. Encourage it even. Then we toss their message into the public space and watch as it's weighed, measured, and subsequently destroyed by the truth.

If the path to winning the culture war is fighting back against sterility, it requires the champions of sterility to be seen in the light as they are, would-be emperors with no clothes. Ultimately, they'll defeat themselves as they continue to force something on the public that isn't wanted or needed.
