It's pretty hilarious that the people who lack the most morals do the most moral grandstanding.
One of the Democrat Party's favorite offensive and defensive maneuvers is to position itself as some sort of authority on goodness. The strategy is the same from subject to subject. They either take up the mantle of victim, or act like the hero, acting to protect or advocate for said victims. Attacking them is automatically an evil act, because you're acting against the oppressed and downtrodden.
While there are those out there that do this purposefully, I think it's safe to bet that most who side with leftists who do this don't understand this strategy. Many seem to believe with all their heart that they're siding with the good guys when they advocate for this group or that policy.
In a nation that values compassion and helping those in need as a virtuous quality, it's a manipulation tactic that is, frankly, brilliant.
But make no mistake, it is despotic. Socially despotic, to be more accurate, but ultimately, it becomes despotic on a governmental level if not checked. We recently went through such a check with the election of Donald Trump, after all that Democrat "compassion" got way too out of control.
A couple of examples would be the transgender movement and the illegal immigration crisis.
Transgenderism is one of the left's most valued victims, because they embody everything they left love in their heart of hearts. They're the "oppressed," they're part of the LGBT crowd, and they're oh so easily manipulated into rage and action. Bonus points to the fact that they're often very friendly to authority figures on the left and they hate Christianity with a passion.
To deny a transgender person their demands is to actually harm them, and put them in a position where they could be killed... according to them. Nothing short of obedience is morally acceptable. Denial of their plight is violence, and it gives them license to practice violence defensively, or even in revenge. You've seen that happen on multiple occasions.
One of the largest examples of the left taking this to an extreme, outside the murder of children, is Antifa, or as it's increasingly being called in conservative circles, "trantifa."
They will descend on innocents to intimidate and assault them in the name of defending the oppressed. As I wrote on Wednesday, they're more than happy to surround and berate a Christian mother holding a small baby and a terrified toddler, with one member even attempting to charge at them. Yet, despite this being an awful thing to do, they see this as virtuous.

Then, there's the Democrats' obsession with illegal immigrants. The politicians only want them here because they can assist in getting them elected through foul play, but the Democrats make it a point to convince the ignorant and stupid that this is all about helping those who are oppressed.
The performances elected politicians put on aren't as concerning to me as the people who believe the performances are genuine.
They don't just believe they have the moral high ground, they repeat the arguments to themselves as they stop ICE from doing their jobs, and when they go to the voting booth. They see themselves as playing a part in the uplifting of the downtrodden but, in truth, they're just allowing themselves to be ruled over by the manipulation of their conscience.
They actively work against the best interests of their own nation, which harms its ability to uplift the downtrodden. Even if this is registered by the person believing the nonsense, it's quickly overridden by their "conscience" and they push forward under the idea that they're being moral and good.
Lurking beneath this is guilt and anger at the unfairness of it all. It causes those who live in the American system that was built on ingenuity, hard work, and paid for in the blood of patriots, to see the nation as gluttonous and evil. Its bounty must be shared to the point of destruction for its sinful existence to be pardoned.
But it's not even a moral position to take. Any position that forces you into it through guilt is not ultimately moral, any more than someone who walked into a gas chamber at gunpoint can be said to have done so "freely." If you got there because you felt compelled through anything but genuine care and concern, you're not being virtuous, you're being obedient to whatever or whoever made you feel guilty.
You're not one of the good guys, you're just submitting to something that has control over your heart and mind.
Moreover, if you adopted a victimhood status in order to force that "care" on others, then you're just a tyrant manipulating, intimidating, and dividing others, and there's nothing moral about that.
C.S. Lewis put it best, as usual, in The Great Divorce.
"The demand of the loveless and the self-imprisoned that they should be allowed to blackmail the universe: that till they consent to be happy (on their own terms) no one else shall taste joy: that theirs should be the final power; that Hell should be able to veto Heaven."
[...]
Either the day must come when joy prevails and all the makers of misery are no longer able to infect it: or else for ever and ever the makers of misery can destroy in others the happiness they reject for themselves. I know it has a grand sound to say ye'll accept no salvation which leaves even one creature in the dark outside. But watch that sophistry or ye'll make a Dog in a Manger the tyrant of the universe.”
