Many Democrats today, especially affluent ones, would have been the pro-slavery Democrats of the 1800s. I think the immigration debate has made that very clear.
Scott Jennings is often a feature on RedState because he's capable of disassembling an entire panel of leftists by himself with just a few sentences, and it's super fun to watch. However, with this CNN clip, I want to draw your attention not to Jennings but his co-panelist, Democrat strategist Jenn Arnold.
After Jennings made a point that anyone who is taking part in the illegal labor pipeline should be prosecuted as they are encouraging illegal immigration to happen, Arnold piped up with one of the least self-aware takes I have ever seen out of a Democrat, which is saying a lot for a CNN panel.
"I can't wait until American women can't get blueberries for their smoothies," said Arnold.
That one sentence alone should have had the rest of the leftists on that panel shushing her or trying to shut her down, because that argument may very well be one of the most brain-dead and disgusting takes on why we need to have illegals in our country ever... but she continues.
"I cannot wait until there is a full crackdown on all small businesses, as if that's going to be the solution to the immigration problem," Arnold continued. "It is just going to put immigration-related issues further into the darker corners. We're not going to see them. It's just going to become even harder to solve the problem."
"B-b-but who will pick the blueberries for my smoothie?"

Democrats continue the time-tested tradition of demanding minorities perform laborious tasks for their own comfort, but like Scott Jennings says, it's a new day in America. pic.twitter.com/b7t682vVuK
So Arnold's argument is effectively that we need to keep illegal immigration going, and not try to shut down the pipelines... because it contributes to the comfort of people like herself.
Who is going to get the ingredients for her smoothies if not these minorities from another nation?
If CNN was capable of existing in the 1800s, I imagine Arnold's ancestor would be on-screen saying, "I can't wait until American women can't get cotton for their clothing," before proceeding to defend plantations.
Today's leftists are full of doublespeak, and I don't think they're fully catching what they're saying when they take this route of argument. "Pick my cotton" has just become "Pick my blueberries."
Their main moral point is that these people are supposedly coming to the United States to escape horrid conditions in their own countries. Here, they can take part in the American dream, away from despots, cartels, and corruption, and truly live a life where they're considered human beings... and the Democrats point them to the fields to do menial labor that supports their own comfort.
It's also a bit odd that the left are the ones who consistently argue for things like a raised minimum wage, and then with the next breath, argue we need illegal immigrants because they will work for far below legal minimum wages, and in conditions they'd be horrified by, if they cared enough to be horrified by them in this particular instance.
Ironic that the party of workers' rights is okay with these workers having no rights.
How are these Democrats of today different from the Democrats of the 1800s, other than they pretend to care about their slaves more?
It boggles the mind how someone could be so unaware of their own hypocrisy, or worse, they're aware of it, but they don't want to acknowledge it. I truly believe it's the former, because a total lack of self-awareness seems to be a pattern among the left.
But as Jennings said in that clip, it's a new day in America. We're not playing this game anymore. Illegal actions will be treated accordingly. We are a country of laws, and we're going to start acting like it.
Sorry about your smoothie.
