The Department of Justice saw fit to monitor the goings on within the group "Moms for Liberty," a grassroots organization designed to protect children and schools from radical leftist, especially when it came to matters of sex and LGBT indoctrination.
According to the Daily Wire, the DOJ’s Community Relations Service (CRS) tracked the group alongside actual hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, as internal documents show. The emails that detail the DOJ's monitoring of Moms for Liberty were revealed thanks to a FOIA request from America First Legal on behalf of the Daily Wire.
The CRS is tasked with “preventing and responding to community tensions and hate crimes, bias, bullying, and discrimination,” and tracked Moms for Liberty through Google and LexisNexis alerts. The Daily Wire reported that the DOJ initially tried to keep these documents hidden by ignoring a FOIA request but was ultimately forced to thanks to a lawsuit by America First Legal.
Despite efforts to figure out why the DOJ decided it needed to track Moms for Liberty like it does the KKK, the DOJ is staying mum so far, but a pattern has been deduced thanks to the emails:
It appears to have used its tracking of Moms for Liberty to identify school boards considering enacting conservative-leaning education policy. It then pressured school boards to defer to the DOJ to resolve the differences of opinion between duly-elected conservative officials and leftist activists, instead of enacting platforms they won elections on.
The Daily Wire obtained emails from DOJ-CRS “Conciliation Specialist” Hannah Levine. The emails suggest that she did little other than track supposed “hate” by setting up Google Alerts and LexisNexis alerts for keywords. For example, she scoured the news for articles that said “washington, dc n-word” and “washington, dc confederate flag.”
On July 20, 2023, one of the Google Alerts sent back an article titled “Virginia Department of Education releases new policies for transgender students.” This resulted in Levine firing off an email to the Roanoke County, Virginia, school board, to “offer our services in conflict resolution":
“CRS is aware of ongoing community tensions in Roanoke County following the release of the new model policies for transgender students. I’d like to connect to see if we might be able to offer support and services as you work to manage conflict within the community related to this,” she wrote in an email that was first reported by The Daily Wire last August.
Has Moms for Liberty ever done anything that could remotely be considered a hate crime? No, but that doesn't matter to the DOJ, which isn't just highly leftist in its own capacity, but it was likely taking marching orders from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which labeled Moms for Liberty as an "antigovernmental extremist" group.
This is hardly the first time Moms for Liberty has come under attack from the government, either. An attorney filed a complaint with the IRS about Moms for Liberty and its non-profit status, saying that it engages in political activism that doesn't line up with its status as a social welfare organization. This launched an investigation into its 501(c)(4) status.
Moms for Liberty is far from being a hate group, and mostly consists of actual parents who are just looking out for their children's best interests. Oftentimes this doesn't line up with what the state thinks is best and as such, the attacks must commence.
But one thing is for sure. If the government is this interested in a group interested in protecting kids from radical leftism, then they must be over the target.
