Trump Super PAC Hits Ron DeSantis With 'Shadow Presidential Campaign' Ethics Complaint

It would seem Donald Trump’s allies aren’t going to let up on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and have now filed a new ethics complaint over what they say is a “shadow presidential campaign.”

According to NBC News, a 15-page complaint was filed by Make America Great Again Inc with the Florida Commission on Ethics that claims DeSantis has been accumulating wealth with the intention of running for President at the expense of Florida taxpayers:

DeSantis is widely expected to run for president but has not yet formally announced. The complaint alleges, however, that he has already checked all the boxes for someone considering a run for the White House, including making stops in early primary states; writing a book (his is titled “The Courage to Be Free”); raising tens of millions of dollars to go into a state-level committee that could be transferred to a federal super PAC; and watching a constellation of supporter-led super PACs and an outside nonprofit group pop up, some with the stated intention of getting DeSantis to run for president.

The pro-Trump super PAC says those steps, when taken together, violate a handful of Florida laws about officeholders’ accepting illegal gifts.

The complaint would find its legs using Florida’s “resign-to-run” law which requires Florida politicians to resign if they’re campaigning for offices in which the first term would overlap with the current office’s ongoing term. The Florida legislature has toyed with the law in the past, changing it in order to pave the way for various Florida politicians to obtain higher office.

Since the law has not been changed yet, all the money DeSantis is acquiring could be used against him in the complaint, or so Trump’s allies hope.

NBC News reports that the primary super PAC in question was created by former top Trump administration DHS official Ken Cuccinelli, called “Run, Ron, Run!”:

The creation of committees like Cuccinelli’s, and other super PACs considered less viable vehicles for pro-DeSantis donors, represents illegal attempts to persuade DeSantis to resign from office, the MAGA Inc. draft complaint argues.

“Run, Ron, Run!, which was formed on March 8, 2023, exists for the sole intent of enticing Governor DeSantis to run for president and exercise his official judgment to submit an irrevocable resignation pursuant to Florida’s resign to run law,” it says.

The complaint getting any traction within the ethics committee is a tall order as DeSantis himself appointed five of the nine members of the commission, but if it does work, NBC News reports that the punishments could include “fines, public censure, ballot disqualification, removal from office or impeachment.”

This complaint’s success could cause some fallout for the DeSantis campaign. For one, DeSantis’s successful governorship of Florida has fed the public a steady string of proof that DeSantis would make a great Republican president. Taking him out of office would stop the flow of examples, and in two years, memory would fade for the general public, especially when other candidates begin throwing their hats into the ring.

This would allow Trump, a man who has more or less defied the need to be in office to stay relevant thanks to consistent attacks against him by Democrats and the media, to regain popularity and challenge DeSantis on equal footing.

That’s assuming DeSantis doesn’t figure out how to stay relevant outside of office, which he very well might given his established tenacity and daring.

But this is all assuming that the unlikely happens and DeSantis is forced out of the governorship by an ethics board he mostly assembled himself. In all likelihood, this complaint will have trouble getting far.
