Leftists Really Don't Like Lauren Boebert's Proposal for More Time to Read Bills Before Voting on Them

Colorado Republican Lauren Boebert has a stellar idea; lawmakers should do their jobs…but it would appear that many leftists have an issue with this.

You’d think being an elected member of congress would involve a lot of reading, seeing as how the proposed bills often affect the people they serve directly, but you’d be absolutely wrong. The number of things lawmakers don’t read is pretty shocking. They just vote yes or no and call it a day.

To put how scary this is into perspective, in 2021, over 9,800 bills were submitted to congress. Eighty-five of these bills were signed into law. Some of them had an extremely large price tag, and it’s safe to say that many elected officials didn’t even read them before voting on them. Also in 2021, Forbes noticed the hesitance of politicians to even talk about having to read the bill, noting that if politicians aren’t reading bills then we don’t really have a representative republic.

It’s a problem that even New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sees as an issue and spoke out about it after House Rules Committee Chairman James McGovern (D-MA) refused to hand out paper copies of the 5,593-page bill to pass the $1.4 trillion COVID relief bill.

This is why Congress needs time to actually read this package before voting on it. Members of Congress have not read this bill. It’s over 5000 pages, arrived at 2pm today, and we are told to expect a vote on it in 2 hours,” she complained.

It was one of the few times she and Ted Cruz agreed on anything…before she accused him of attempting to murder her.

Boerbert took to social media to upload a public proposal, including restoring certain rules that would make it “the people’s house” instead of “Pelosi’s house” where she will no longer be able to function as a “super legislator.” She also suggested reinstating the “Holman Rule” which would allow legislation to reduce the salary of or fire specific federal employees.

Boerbert then proposed something that should be common sense. Introducing bills in the dead of night and then demanding they be voted on that day needs to come to an end, and she proposed a minimum of five days between the bill’s introduction to the vote on it. She also noted that if the bill was an emergency and needed to be passed immediately, then it should require a two-thirds vote. She also suggested earmarks be banned once more.

No matter your feelings on Boebert, this shouldn’t actually be a problem. In fact, bringing elected officials under control and not allowing them free reign with your taxpayer dollars and making them do the job we pay them to do should be one thing the majority of us agree on naturally.

However, since it came out of Boebert’s mouth, the left is rejecting it out of hand. Again, AOC wished for something very similar, but Boebert bad.

Leftists began slamming Boebert, including members of the media. Uproxx said she was “triggered,” and Politicususa mocked her by saying “reading is hard.” One Twitter user suggested Boebert stop fundraising and Twitter trolling so she has more time to read bills. Another suggested that instead of passing these rules, they should pass laws that require people with a bachelor’s degree at minimum to be qualified to run for office, mocking Boebert’s GED.

There are a ton more, but you get the idea. The vitriol being thrown her way is unwarranted, especially given the fact that her suggestion is literally to force officials who work for us to do their jobs.

Boebert responded to all the hate on Twitter.

“Democrats being outraged that I’m pushing to force a five-day period for legislators to actually read legislation before they pass it tells you everything you need to know about how they think government should work,” she tweeted. “Know what’s in the bill BEFORE passing it. Pretty simple.”

She’s not wrong, and one can’t help but think that if congress actually did read the bills they passed then our nation would be a lot healthier than it is.
