Rashida Jones Spoke out Against the Porn Industry and You Probably Didn't Hear About It

Rashida Jones is best known for being a comedic actress in shows like Parks and Rec and The Office, but what you might not know is that she’s also an advocate for openly speaking out against the personal cost of the porn industry and warning about how seductive and destructive it is, not to men, but to young women.

In fact, back in 2015, she helped release a documentary called “Hot Girls Wanted” that really highlights the cozy relationship porn has with mainstream culture and how it seeps into pop culture through various celebrities and artists. She gave an interview about it with Vice where she made it clear that while she thinks porn as an adult-produced and adult-consumed industry is fine, but it cannot be ignored that its inclusion into mainstream culture has produced some horrifying side effects.

For one, it convinces young women to accept sexual abuse while it tells them they’re empowered.

Jones tries her best to be viewed as a centrist during the interview, but at the very end gives it away that she’s having to try very hard to come off that way. It’s an interview worth watching.

Fast forward to this year and Jones is still speaking out about it. In a recent interview with “Off Camera,” Jones was asked about her outspokenness about the porn industry again and said some poignant things about the porn industry that should be getting the attention of the entire country.

The interviewer was talking to Jones about a girl who went into the porn industry despite having a stable home life with parents that are still together and outstanding education. Jones cut in and highlighted why even girls with good home lives are vulnerable.

“Because it’s not considered a step-down,” interjected Jones.

“When the most famous woman in the world started her career with an amateur porn tape — and we know who I’m talking about — it’s impossible to tell an 18-year-old girl that that is not a viable option. It’s impossible. You have no proof.”

Jones added that from the perspective of the young girl who sees this, porn is now considered “glamourous.”

“And by the way, just to mention, ironically, the only legal difference between porn and prostitution is a camera,” continued Jones. “And so a lot of these girls, they go on castings, and they go on jobs, and there’s a guy with a camera and he never turns it on..and think about how this country feels about prostitution.”

Jones said that her biggest problem with porn is the amount of draw it has to young women and how, even at the legal age of 18, these girls are still pretty dumb and they make dumb choices that could damage them forever emotionally, physically, and psychologically.

Jones’s exploration into the effect of young women on the porn industry is important as it’s often not talked about enough. In fact, as Jones demonstrated, speaking out against the hyper-sexualization in this country can land one in some very hot water. As such, many people with large platforms avoid talking about it. Jones is actually very brave for saying as much as she has.

The focus on young women that Jones seems to zero in on most is actually more troublesome than seen here. Jones often talks about professional shoots in “amateur porn” but increasingly, one doesn’t even have to fly to a location, get hair and makeup done, and then perform sexual acts in front of a camera crew.

As RedState has covered before, porn is evolving. Now a young woman doesn’t have to do all that to make money in the porn industry, she can just activate an app and use her phone’s camera.

Sites like “OnlyFans” have made it possible for girls to make pornography that they can make a good deal of money with from the comfort of their home. OnlyFans is a subscription model that allows girls to pose and expose while receiving subs, tips, and bundle deals.

OnlyFans has over 150 million users with some of its most famous users earning $1 million a month.

It’s not just teen girls being seduced into using this platform for attention and money, it’s also being used by older women. Wives, teachers, medical professionals, etc., etc., all use this platform that has them engaging in either revealing or highly sexualized activities to strangers, and all from the comfort of home.

Jones is correct. There needs to be more focus put on the dangers of the porn industry. More honest conversations and pushes for studies into the emotional and psychological effects of it.

Moreover, Jones needs to be given more of a megaphone for this. While I’m more than thrilled that she’s doing this, it’s strange that people haven’t heard more about it or that interviews like this aren’t more widely circulated. It’s clear that there are people out there who don’t want her discussing this for various reasons, including some mainstream tastemakers who believe that an attack on the hypersexuality of our culture is somehow an attack on the empowerment of women.
