President Joe Biden’s day-one decision to terminate the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline cost thousands of Americans their jobs and, despite Democrats and organized labor unions going hand in hand, AFL-CIO Union Leader Richard Trumka spoke against the decision and made it clear that Biden made a huge mistake.
Trumka said he wished he hadn’t canceled the pipeline on day one due to the fact that there was no backup job for many of these people to land on.
“Well, I wish he had not done that on the first day because the Labor’s International was right, it did and will cost us jobs in the process,” Trumka told Axios. “I wish he had paired that more carefully with the thing that he did second by saying, here’s where we are creating jobs, we can do mine reclamation, we can fix leaks, and we can fix seeps, and create hundreds of thousands in doing all of that stuff.”
Trumka sat down for an interview with “Axios on HBO” and said that when you kill jobs, replacing them isn’t that simple.
“If you destroy 100 jobs in Greene County, Pennsylvania, where I grew up, and you create 100 jobs in California, it doesn’t do those 100 families much good,” Trumka said.“If you’re looking at a pipeline and you’re saying we’re going to put it down, now what are you going to do to create the same good-paying jobs in that area?”
“You know, when they laid off at the mines back in Pennsylvania, they told us they were going to train us to be computer programmers,” he continued. “And I said, ‘Where are the computer programmer jobs at?’ ‘Uh, they’re in, uh, Oklahoma and they’re in Vegas and they’re here.’ And I said, ‘So, in other words, what we’re going to be is unemployed miners and unemployed computer programmers as well.’”
.@RichardTrumka completely missed the political realignment. The GOP is now the workers’ Party. The Dems are the Party of Wall St., Big Tech, radical Leftists & enviro activists. Now he’s got buyer’s remorse & his members are getting crushed. Huge blunder. pic.twitter.com/xthc55j8gU

Trumka said he trusts Biden’s word that more jobs will be created, noting that the entire reason the pipeline construction was terminated was because Biden was keeping his word, but he also made it clear that Biden’s promise to create jobs has, so far, been a complete falsehood due to the fact that he’s been busy terminating them instead.
The backlash against Biden’s decision has been pretty widespread. Other unions have spoken out against Biden’s pipeline-killing decision, including Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) which sent out this tweet before the decision was made.
#Pipeline construction has been a lifeline for many #LIUNA members across the country. The anticipated decision to cancel the #KeystonePipeline will kill thousands of good-paying #UNION jobs! #pipelinesarelifelines #energy pic.twitter.com/p0BxD1vPHV

It should be noted that unions supported Biden in his bid for the presidency and so these very same unions crying out in protest against Biden’s decision to kill the construction of the pipeline share a good deal of the blame for the very jobs that are now gone. The Democrats made no effort to hide their contempt for the pipeline and promises had been made for the termination of its construction.
There is no way these unions didn’t see this move coming, yet they continued to support the Biden presidency in spite of this.
It’s likely that more jobs are going to be terminated before Biden is through and despite the fact that his administration has promised to open up jobs in the green sector, as one terminated pipeline worker made clear, it’s not as simple as jumping from one job to another. Specializing and training is something that people work at for specific jobs and many will have to begin their careers all over, being trained on how to build, install, and upkeep solar panels.

Biden has made himself appear as the friend of the working man, describing himself as “that kid from Scranton,” but he’s clearly allowing leftist ideological zealotry to make his decisions, not common sense, and surely not the best interests of the American people.
