Newt Gingrich Puts Kamala Harris In a No-Win Situation Over Amy Coney Barrett

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich foresees President Donald Trump nominating Amy Coney Barrett as the woman to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, but having the tactical mind he does, Gingrich wants to make it clear that this is more of a problem for the Democrats than they think.

Barrett is a devout Catholic, and as such, effectively dared Democrats to attack her on those grounds, specifically potential Democrat VP Kamala Harris, who has a history of anti-Catholic bias.

“If President Trump nominates Amy Coney Barrett, Notre Dame Law Professor, Appeals Court judge, mother of 7 (2 adopted from Haiti), clerk for Scalia, devout Catholic, it will pose a unique challenge for Kamala Harris — the most anti-Catholic bigot nominated in over a century,” tweeted Gingrich.

“Are Democrats prepared to say a devout Catholic is by definition unfit to serve on the Supreme Court?” he continued. “If no pro-life Justice is acceptable then no faithful Catholic, Evangelical or Orthodox Jew can be considered. Are Democrats really prepared to alienate that many Americans?”

Harris famously wondered aloud if Nebraska district judge Brian Buescher was fit to serve because he was involved with the Knights of Columbas, a Catholic charity organization.

“Since 1993, you have been a member of the Knights of Columbus, an all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men,” said Harris. “In 2016, Carl Anderson, leader of the Knights of Columbus, described abortion as ‘a legal regime that has resulted in more than 40 million deaths.’ Mr. Anderson went on to say that ‘abortion is the killing of the innocent on a massive scale.’ Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?”

Harris isn’t the only Democrat that has shown an anti-Catholic bias. In 2017, California Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein told Barrett herself that her “domgma lives loudly” within her.

“Why is it that so many of us on this side have this very uncomfortable feeling that dogma and law are two different things, and I think whatever a religion is, it has its own dogma. The law is totally different,” said Feinstein. “And I think in your case, professor, when you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you. And that’s of concern.”

While Gingrich brings up a good point about the Democrats risking alienating Catholics, he might be a bit late. As my colleague Bonchie covered earlier Monday, the anti-Catholic attacks on Barrett have already begun.

The Catholic Church is the largest religious body in the United States. There are some 51 million people who describe themselves as Catholic. While not every single one of those people will be insulted by Democrats attacking the Catholic faith of a Supreme Court nominee, if even a fraction of that 51 million finds themselves bitter towards Democrats over that line of assault toward Barrett then it could further affect the outcome of the 2020 election.

Gingrich is right. Democrats need to play this as carefully as humanly possible but as has been proven time and again, they’re out of practice when it comes to tactics. Moreover, leadership is being led by the mob, not the other way around, and the mob seems fully ready to attack Barrett over her religion.

Unless some dark miracle happens, it’s likely the attacks on Barrett are not going to go over well with the American citizenry, and rest assured, attacks are coming. Nasty attacks that will make Brett Kavanaugh’s time in the mainstream’s infamy spotlight look tame by comparison.
