It wasn’t a great moment for Democrats during the 2020 debates last week when Robert “Beto” O’Rourke promised that he was going to take our AR-15’s and AK-47’s. He even sent out a similar tweet to make sure we understood he wasn’t kidding. While he got massive applause for it from the crowd, the majority of America wasn’t so keen on it, and actually began dogpiling onto O’Rourke.

But it wasn’t just pro-gun Americans and right-leaning voters that thought O’Rourke’s declaration was foolish. Democrat politicians did too, namely Sen. Christopher Coons of Deleware, who went on CNN on Friday to foretell that O’Rourke’s gun grab promise is going to haunt Democrats for years according to The Hill: 

“I frankly think that that clip will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying that Democrats are coming for your guns,” Coons, an ally of former Vice President Joe Biden in the Democratic race, told CNN’s Poppy Harlow in an interview.

He’s not wrong. Those who like and want to keep their guns are consistently up against a Democrat party that has tried to restrict them in one way or another, and from time to time. However, we’ve always heard that they don’t want to take away our guns, just certain ones, or make them harder to get for everyone’s safety.

From time to time, however, Democrats or gun grabbers like O’Rourke will say something that proves gun owners’ fears right. The goal of the Democrats was to ban guns, but America is a pro-gun country and in order to pass a full-on ban, the Overton window would have to be moved little by little.

O’Rourke just gave up the game. This was even mentioned by The Hill:

O’Rourke’s statement confirms the fears of many Republicans and gun rights advocates who say the ultimate goal of the gun control movement is government confiscation of firearms.

“When you really understand what the endgame of the left is, it’s literally mandatory buybacks or as I call it: confiscation. This is a step-by-step process for them,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Hill Thursday when asked about the debate over expanded background checks for firearms sales.
