During a congressional hearing on white nationalism, Rep. Ted Lieu thought that he had nailed conservative activist and Turning Point USA official Candace Owens against the wall with a comment she had made about Hitler, but soon found the move backfiring.

Lieu played a clip of Owens during a Q&A where she was asked if she had a problem with nationalism, wherein Owens said she did not and that the only reason it has a bad name is that it was first made villainous by Adolf Hitler.

“If Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well — OK, fine,” she says. “The problem is … he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German.”

“Of all the people Republicans could have selected, they picked Candace Owens,” said Lieu.

Lieu played the clip of Owens, saying that he doesn’t know her but will let her words speak for her.

Without giving Owens a chance to explain herself, Lieu turned to Eileen Hershenov, senior vice president of policy at the Anti-Defamation League, and asked if comments like this fuel white nationalism.

“It does Mr. Lieu,” said Hershenov. “I know that Ms. Owens distanced herself from those comments later, but we express great concern over the original comments.”

This infuriated Owens, who was then finally given a chance to respond by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) who apologized and asked if she’d like to respond to the clip.

“I think it’s pretty apparent that Mr. Lieu thinks that black people are stupid and will not pursue the full clip in its entirety,” Owens began.

She was then cut off by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) who said it was improper to disparage a member of the committee and that Owens will not do that again, adding that she called Lieu “stupid.”

“I didn’t refer to him as stupid. That’s not what said,” said Owens. That’s not what I said at all. You didn’t listen to what I said.”

Nadler only shrugged and Owens continued, pointing out that Lieu purposefully played a shortened clip that cast Owens as sympathetic to Hitler’s cause.

“He purposefully extracted clip, he cut off, and you didn’t hear the question that was asked of me,” said Owens.

Owens continued by highlighting that Hitler wasn’t a nationalist as he was a “psychopathic maniac that killed his own people,” and went on to highlight that she works for Prager U, which is run by an orthodox Jew, and that she went to the embassy opening in Jerusalem where only one Democrat showed up.

Owens finished by saying that she was deeply offended by the clip played in the context that it was, without the question that was asked of her beforehand.

The greatest part about this was Lieu’s face after this, which was to side-eye the room awkwardly after the much deserved verbal spanking he received.
