Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate Stacy Abrams signs on to the typical left-leaning stance most Democrats do when it comes to guns.

The position usually involves words like “safety” and “responsibility,” alongside scary words such as “assault weapons” or “weapons of war.” Abrams is no different. As she told CNN on Monday morning, she wants a ban on assault weapons in order to make Georgia safer.

It’s standard fare from a Democrat, but in a surprising move of clarity, CNN wanted to know how far she’d go in order to push her gun laws and wouldn’t let her deviate from the question.

The first time was when Jake Tapper tried to press her on the issue, but she did everything in her power to dodge the question as my colleague Alex Parker highlighted.

CNN decided to give it a second go, and while appearing on the network on Monday morning, Abrams still found herself unable to give a clear answer to the question.

“Do you support a law that would require Georgians to turn in some of their assault weapons?” asked the CNN anchor.

Abrams didn’t answer the question, and immediately reiterated her position on banning assault weapons, and then began waxing on about how guns are so easily misused and that it poses a safety hazard for all Georgians. She did say that some people should be held to a different standard given their pasts but did not clarify what that means.

As she attempted to wrap up, the CNN anchor interrupted her and pressed the question again.

“Banning them is one thing, requiring them to turn them in is another,” said the CNN anchor, “and the voters in Georgia just want to know if you support a law that would require them to turn in their assault weapons.”

Abrams said that she’d support legislation approved by Georgia’s House and Senate to “create the safest space in Georgia.” She spouted more rhetoric about “common sense gun legislation,” and threw out platitudes about bi-partisan decision making, but still would not answer the question.

The safe bet here is that Abrams, a woman who seems to lean radically to the left, is not giving anyone a clear answer as to whether or not she’s supporting gun confiscation because the answer is yes, and that kind of answer in the south is likely a deal killer for many voters.

Her Republican opponent, Brian Kemp, has been leading in RCP polls by an average of two points, and it may give him a small boost.
