The Washington Post Just Blamed Trump for Creating a Hurricane...No, That's Not a Joke

This enhanced satellite image made available by NOAA shows Tropical Storm Florence, upper left, in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. EDT. At center is Tropical Storm Isaac and at right is Hurricane Helene. (NOAA via AP)

Hurricanes are about to displace a lot of people, destroying homes, lives, and costing people a collective fortune in repairs. What does the Washington Post do about it? Find a way to use this to blame Trump, of course!

I wish I was being hyperbolic. I didn’t believe it when I first saw the headline myself. I thought that perhaps the title of the opinion piece by the WaPo editorial board itself, “Another hurricane is about to batter our coast. Trump is complicit,” was just click bait and that reading the story would further elaborate what they’re really trying to say.

Nope! Trump is helping to create hurricanes, folks.

After acknowledging Trump ringing the alarm about the hurricane was a good thing, WaPo drops this bomb:

Yet when it comes to extreme weather, Mr. Trump is complicit. He plays down humans’ role in increasing the risks, and he continues to dismantle efforts to address those risks. It is hard to attribute any single weather event to climate change. But there is no reasonable doubt that humans are priming the Earth’s systems to produce disasters.

The WaPo editorial board spends a couple paragraphs citing a researcher who said that hurricanes feed off of the warm air — which of course is also man-made — before it raises the issue that Trump is reversing Obama policies that deal with climate change and, I can only assume, would have saved us all from hurricanes:

With depressingly ironic timing, the Trump administration announced Tuesday a plan to roll back federal rules on methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is the main component in natural gas. Drillers and transporters of the fuel were supposed to be more careful about letting it waft into the atmosphere, which is nothing more than rank resource waste that also harms the environment. The Trump administration has now attacked all three pillars of President Barack Obama’s climate-change plan.

The president has cemented the GOP’s legacy as one of reaction and reality denial. Sadly, few in his party appear to care.

Let’s be very clear here. The Washington Post blamed Donald Trump for the creation of a natural phenomenon that has been occurring since the Earth was young. It has essentially told its readers that because Trump has dismissed Obama era policies, that natural event that happens yearly, and has been happening since long before the industrial age, that people are going to suffer a cataclysmic event.

We’re still not sure if man-made global warming (I thought it was just climate change now) is impacting the environment on a large enough scale to manipulate the weather into a catastrophic event on a level with god-like powers. Even the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration admit this in their June overview.

“In the Atlantic, it is premature to conclude that human activities–and particularly greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming–have already had a detectable impact on hurricane activity,” states the NOAA.

This entire episode from the Washington Post seems to be, as the final paragraphs let on, a temper tantrum over Trump tossing out Obama’s policies, and scaremongering people into thinking that because Democrat policies are gone — and I’m sure you know where this is going by now — people will DIE!

It’s kind of disgusting to me that the Washington Post would take a very real event that is going to harm the lives of millions and turn it into a political platform on which to finger-wag at Trump and drive anger toward his administration.
