Trump’s decision to call Jerusalem the capital of Israel is having more fallout than angry protests and failed rocket launches. It would appear that Islamic nations are now getting together to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, and they’re bringing the issue to the UN General Council.
According to the Anadolu Agency, the declaration came from a group of Islamic countries under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), led by Turkish President Erdogan, in a communique.
The communique said it “rejects and condemns in the strongest terms the unilateral decision by the president of the United States America recognizing Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel, the occupying power.”
It urged the world to recognize East Jerusalem as the occupied capital of the Palestinian state and invited “all countries to recognize the state of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital.”
The 57-member bloc also affirmed “its readiness to take the Jerusalem issue to the UN General Assembly if the UN Security Council fails to take action” against the “grave violation” of the U.S. decision.
The communique came after the OIC had an emergency meeting, where Erdogan pledged to continue to “end the Israeli occupation.”
“We will continue the struggle for Jerusalem, on the basis of law and legitimacy, with our international partners until the US administration retreats from its wrong decision and ends the Israeli occupation,” he said.
“We, as an organization, will never abandon an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” he said. “The fate of Jerusalem can not be left to a state that feeds on blood and extends its borders by killing children, civilians and women in a brutal way.”
This was not the first time Erdogan accused Israel of being child killers. On Monday, Erdogan called Palestine an “innocent victim” of Israel, which he labeled a “terrorist state.”
Israeli Prime Minister didn’t take Erdogan’s insults sitting down and responded by roasting Turkey, adding that Erdogan was a “leader who bombs Kurdish villages” in his own country, jails journalists, and supports terrorism.
The OIC isn’t the only group to pledge to make Jerusalem the capital of Israel. The European Union also believes that Jerusalem should be taken out of Israeli hands solely, and should be shared between the two states.
“The European Union has a clear and united position. We believe the only realistic solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine is based on two states and with Jerusalem as the capital of both,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini told a news conference according to Reuters.
