We don’t get to see them often, but when an A-list actor speaks highly of the Judeo-Christian God, or even more specifically Christ, it’s something we can’t help but stop and stare at. It’s like finding a unicorn, or member of the GOP that actually keeps his promises.
Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, most popular for his portrayal of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the most recent example of a celebrity speaking openly about Christ, and from the actual bible no less.
How did this happen?
It occurred during Disney’s celebration and retelling of the first Christmas, a Disneyland tradition that has miraculously survived since the 1950’s. According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Disney spares little expense for this occasion.
The nearly 600 voices were made up of choirs from schools, churches and other groups around California. It also included an all-volunteer Disneyland Cast Choir, and the Walt Disney Studios Cast Choir.
Musical accompaniment was provided by a live, 50-piece orchestra.
The ceremony started with the choir, holding battery-powered candles, hence the name, walking down Main Street U.S.A. while singing Christmas carols. When they reached Town Square, they climbed the steps in front of the Main Street train station for the Disneyland Railroad and up onto a variety of risers, including a section where they formed a “Living Christmas Tree.”
Once all the voices were in place the rest of the annual event started, including the appearance of a guest narrator, in this case Hemsworth.
As the singing from the choir stopped, Hemsworth took to a lectern and began reading aloud from the Gospel of Luke, which tells the story of Christ’s birth. This was then accompanied by more singing from the choir and orchestra.
I’m sure that for many celebrities who live in the noxious Hollywood bubble, glorifying Christ in any way can earn some serious ire. When Matthew McConaughey gave God some serious glory during his 2014 speech, he angered plenty in the media and in the mob. McConaughey’s stature is such that he can get away with it, and may have even changed the anti-Christian landscape within Hollywood.
To see a fresh, A-list talent like Hemsworth read the Gospel is a great sign in a land where depravity and nastiness towards Christians run amok.
