President Donald Trump said on Friday that he believes Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore “will do the right thing and step aside” should the allegations of his sexual misconduct prove to be true.
According to the New York Post, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Trump believes “mere allegations” decades old should not destroy a person’s life.
However, Sanders added that “the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”
The incident began when claims surfaced from Alabama woman Leigh Corfman over Moore attempting sexual activities with her when she was only 14, and he was 32.
Moore has already denied any truth to the claims.
Regardless of the veracity of the claims, Republican institutions have begun distancing themselves from the Senate candidate. The Republican Party’s Senate campaign wing has already severed its fundraising agreement with Moore according to Politico.
