Amid the D.C. furor and geopolitical conflicts, it might have been overlooked by some that this week was the start of Major League Baseball. Even if you are not a baseball purist, Opening Day across the country still can hold a touch of significance. The inherent promise is tangible that every team holds (save for the minor-league Miami Marlins, it launches us into summer, and it simply holds all the traditions from past generations.

Even as MLB's stature has ebbed over the decades, Americana is still imbued in the game, and this week still carries many of those traits, dusty they may be. So it was very stirring to see a sight from one of the openers, even for me, who does not hold interest in the sport.

At San Francisco’s Oracle Park, for the Giants’ home opener, they were filled with American pride. A singer from the U.S. Navy belted out the National Anthem, while the outfield had the Stars & Stripes stretched across the turf in the shape of the Lower 48. But midway through the anthem, an impressive sight was displayed in the sky.

Over the years, drone technology has advanced to the point that swarms of aircraft are used for aerial display light shows. They can create three-dimensional images and even include some animation. Normally, this has been relegated to nighttime activities, but this week was a shift, as a daytime solution has been crafted.

Behold – the Smoke Flag:

Very impressive, fleeting as it was. Here is another shot of it, taken close to McCovey Cove, located over the right field wall.

The day prior to the game, this was tested out, and the effect was captured by a local news station.

And then for the opposite angle, there is this video from the harbor, right outside the stadium. They captured the drones in position just ahead of the display, and then they went off.

It is quite okay to sit back and just absorb some solid American pride. Don’t let the haters and contrarians say otherwise.
