Worst News Outlet of the Week - a Look at the Latest Deliveries From the Dysfunctional Media

It has been an interesting week of dysfunction seen in the media environment as the measure of the dismal deliveries has brought a uniquely varied list of candidates. Networks, cable, and digital are all represented, and in a bit of an upset they are topped by a first-time winner that is more of a media entity.

While tariffs had many outlets energized, there was a wide variety of topics getting the press hot and bothered. Let’s start mucking around in the media swamps and see who took top (bottom) honors this week.

     THE CONTENDERS

PBS - On “PBS News Weekend,” Lisa Desjardins spoke with an Iranian journalist about her oppression and escaping that country and tried to get her to agree that Trump was just as bad. (She failed, by the way.) While the Signal scandal has all but died off, Jeffrey Goldberg was still pimping his story to keep it alive. On “PBS NewsHour," they heavily sold us on caring that a Yale professor was moving to Canada because of President Trump. After the earthquake in Myanmar it was reported Trump caused deaths because of cuts to USAID.

CBS News – Lesley Stahl spoke with a released Israeli hostage and suggested in sympathetic fashion that Hamas was not starving him but merely had no food of its own. The network had to admit there is support for Trump’s deportation policies based on its own polling. With news of a female fencing athlete choosing not to compete against a biological male, CBS declared it was “an opponent she says is trans,” despite having competed in the men’s division the previous season. The nightly news detailed the dollar amounts Elon Musk donated in the Wisconsin election but only gave passing mention to the Democrats also receiving donations.

The Atlantic – It delivered a report that typified the sin of omission on a Maryland “father” wrongfully deported, ignoring his illegal status, that he is a MS-13 gang member, and that the “wrongful” part was concerning which country to deport him to. David Frum had a notably imbalanced week, delivering his trademark disturbed punditry. One editor rented a Cybertruck to drive in D.C. and catalogue the vulgar responses he received - though he seemed oblivious these are the hyper-emotional leftists making up their readership.

MSNBC – The 2025 first quarter ratings show dire numbers for the cable channel, which at times dropped below lowly CNN in some categories. The network’s star statistician is leaving - or more likely, not going along with the cut loose network, deciding to take his talents to NBC News. Laughably, Lawrence O’Donnell has been holding out for a Maddow-level massive contract from the struggling network. Speaking of Maddow, she exposed the astroturf nature of this weekend’s Tesla protests in her equitable coverage of the organized upheaval.

    THE WINNER

WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS' ASSOCIATION

After declaring that comedian Amber Ruffin was the perfect choice for the annual WHCA Awards Dinner (aka “The Nerd Prom”), president of the WHCA Eugene Daniels came out with the abrupt announcement that she has been canceled.

It was said that this was done as Daniels was “re-envisioning” the focus on the awards ceremony. Of course Daniels, who made the initial raving decision to have Ruffin host, made this switch following some caustic comments from Ruffin about the administration. She later came out to say that she had been instructed by the WHCA to moderate some of her comments in her dinner monologue.

Already suffering a blow from the previous decision that the White House press office was taking charge of the scheduling of the WH press pool participants, the next move was to have that office dictate the new seating arrangements in the press room. The WHCA issued a snippy letter in opposition to the move.

It was then revealed that members and executives were actually contemplating a civil rights-like sit-in as a form of protest to this move.
