The Remmy Award Press Nominations: Soft Thinking on Hard Hats, 'LA Times' Gets Soup on Its Face

In recognizing the dregs of press unprofessionalism, journalistic sloth, and general media malpractice, we have created "The Golden Remington Awards," a nod to the olden days when hard-scrabble hacks committed actual journalism and hammered out dispatches on these hefty wordsmith devices. With an eye to that past of muckraking reporting and shoe leather investigation, we acknowledge those who fail today in audacious fashion.

These are the inauspicious nominations, in several categories, for this year’s Remmys.

Distinguished Investigative Reporting

  • David Emery - Snopes

Here is all the proof you need that fact-checkers approach every story first from the standpoint of how it affects the Democrats, and secondly on what the facts are. When Joe Biden made a campaign stop with some blue-collar workers he attempted to be like one of the guys. Yet, when Senator Amy Klobuchar posted a photo of herself and the President with some of the workers, there was Lunchpail Joe sporting a hard hat. And blatantly wearing it backward

As the president was immediately ridiculed online Snopes rushed in to run defense, declaring he had been wearing the hat correctly – and then Snopes was immediately ridiculed. The best was not only was the site 180 degrees incorrect, but part of the “proof” offered up in the piece was a picture of the worker who owns said hard hat, and he was shown to be wearing it correctly. Snopes, the supposed final word on the facts, had to issue an Editor’s Note to its article declaring it had itself been fact-checked.

Distinguished Local Reporting

  • [ Unknown ]

We are still trying to track down the name of this Kansas City reporter (the station may have pulled the footage after understandable mockery), but she is a gem. Following a shooting at a local mall, this dogged reporter was on the scene and discovered a possible factor in the violence. The advisory on the doors that the location was a “weapons-free” zone turned out to be somewhat smaller than regulations require.

The Jennifer Rubin Honor - (Recognition for coverage contradiction)

  • Chris Cillizza on Substack

The former CNN pundit, who now plies his trade on Substack, felt the need to wade into the discussions surrounding the numerous layoffs at press outlets. In one exchange with Jeremy Redfern, the press secretary for Ron DeSantis, Chris blithely tries correcting him about being fired. The only problem is that Chris was, in fact, fired – something he personally confirmed just weeks earlier.

Distinguished International Reporting

  • Paul Bernell - BBC

With all manner of challenges being faced by the restauranteur, owner Adonis Norouznia of the eatery Nomas Gastrobar in Macclesfield, England, explains "It is very difficult to stay in business selling only vegan." This means he did some extensive soul-searching and had to arrive at a decision to keep his doors open.

He will begin serving dishes prepared with meat.

Various influences are causing a strain on his business -- such as inflation, trade issues, and farming depletions on the continent. There is one other important challenge he faces; he serves vegan food.

Mr Norouznia said:

The limitations of our vegan menu, at times, meant we welcomed only a small number of customers, making it increasingly difficult for our business to thrive financially.

When some people find out we are vegan they walk out.

Distinguished Explanatory Reporting

  • Joe Scarborough - MSNBC

While most people were understandably upset with the news of a gang of illegal immigrants attacking police in New York, only to then be released without bail and allowed to ship out to California, it was not understandable that the host of “Morning Joe” would also be upset, yet Scar-Joe was voicing his outrage.

Of course, it was understandable that Joe Biden’s favorite morning host would try to deflect blame, but we cannot understand how illegal immigrants coming into the country through Biden’s open border, seeking refuge in the Democrat sanctuary berg of New York, and being set free by a hyper-leftist District Attorney Alvin Bragg are somehow blamed on Republican policies--and Donald Trump.

Distinguished Editorial Writing

  • Shannon Gibson - Los Angeles Times

By now, most proper-thinking people are sick of the European protestors who think they are making a statement by vandalizing classic works of art. Of the few remaining folks at the Los Angeles Times, proper thinking is at a premium, as we get this op-ed that sells the concept of these anti-social actions, coupled with lobbying efforts, having an effect and moving policy in their favor.

When in-your-face activism takes place at the same time as formal institutional challenges, studies show the combination can help increase awareness of the problem and support for moderate action.

Do you mean like the time Joe Biden allowed the Russian pipeline to feed oil to Europe, and the recent announcement that U.S. petroleum producers reached a new output level? Yeah, we need to see some actual progress before we are impressed.

Distinguished Photojournalism

  • Matthew Sedacca - New York Post

Just how juvenile does one need to be to think this was a news item? How sophomoric of an editor must a publication have to greenlight this as a submission? Whatever the answer, be assured those standards are in place at the New York Post Metro Desk, because they felt it was completely valid to plant this item ... about a local building that has a rooftop patio in the shape of male genitalia when viewed from the sky.
