There remain more questions than answers.

As Bonchie reported earlier, this morning news broke about CNN personality and onetime Florida Gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Gillum involved in an early morning hours incident with a possible drug overdose taking place. While not the one cited as the OD victim, police reports do state Gillum was in a heavily impaired condition when authorities arrived.

What was unclear in the report was the type of substance of which Gillum had been under the influence. The report described him as “Gillum was unable to communicate with officers due to his inebriated state.” It also comments that Gillum was in the bathroom vomiting, as was the individual suspected of the overdose.

Methamphetamines were found on-site in the hotel room. “Officers observed in plain sight three small clear plastic baggies containing suspected crystal meth on both the bed and floor of the hotel room.” Gillum had his condition checked and was found to not be in physical danger, then despite the dangerous incident, and the presence of illegal drugs at the scene, Gillum was free to leave. ‘’Mr. Gillum left the hotel room and returned to his residence without incident.”

In response, Gillum has this morning issued a brief statement.

So, based on the wording of the police report, he can lay claim to being merely intoxicated, and since no other action was taken on the scene by authorities he seems to be steering clear of any serious legal ramifications. What is unclear, however, is why his statement is not corroborated by the third member in the room last night.

The Miami New Times reached out to Travis Dyson, the individual who had rented the room and eventually called for emergency response while attending to the victim. Dyson was asked specifically about the comment about Gillum being in town for a wedding, and he very interestingly seemed completely oblivious to this comment.

It makes little sense that Gillum’s close friend would be completely unaware of a claimed wedding when that is the stated reason for Gillum’s presence in town, as well as the pretense for his claimed inebriation. It does little to clear up how he connected with the two men, when heavy drugs were in use. While Gillum clearly will prefer his privacy to be respected he has actually provoked at least as many questions as he had hoped to lay to rest.
