Democrats are acknowledging the toxicity of the former head of the DNC — journalists however, not so much.

The continued unravelling of the career of former DNC Chairperson Debbie Wasserman Schultz is rather self-evident to so many that even Democrats are tossing her over the transom. Our media complex however still remains notably dispassionate about the entire sordid affair involving the deposed party leader.

Her allegiance towards, and manipulations aiding, Imran Awan, her confidant at the center of a swelling IT scandal within House of Representative offices are tough to ignore. The press however is putting out all effort to elide any interest. Even when covering the story directly you are presented with every reason not to delve too deeply into the fracas.  

I present for you Marc Caputo, from Politico. In the face of mounting evidence and questions Caputo serves journalists with the proper coverage of this issue. He acts as Lt. Frank Drebon of the “Naked Gun” series, standing in front of an exploding fireworks factory and attempting to disperse the crowd with commands “There’s nothing to see here!”

This becomes more comical when there is obvious outrage not just from within the Democrat party but even within the sympathetic confines of her State, and even her hyper-partisan district. A growing number of Democrats are vocally distancing themselves from the former DNC leader.

• “We wish she would go away and stop being so public by doubling down on negative stories,” said Nikki Barnes, a progressive DNC member from Florida, who believes Wasserman Schultz left the national party “in shambles” while chair, culminating with the hack of DNC servers and the release of embarrassing internal emails by WikiLeaks in the 2016 campaign. As for Wasserman Schultz’s defense, Barnes said “none of this makes sense. It doesn’t sound like racial profiling … there must have been something for her.”

This follows other serious rebukes Schultz has absorbed in her home state. The leader of the Democratic African-American Women’s Caucus lambasted her and declared her a drain on party image and fundraising. Then this past June the Florida Democrat party held a massive fund raising event with major stars from the party, including Joe Biden. DWS was not included, even as this posh event was staged in her home district.

Although Caputo does mention Wasserman is absorbing criticism from all sides he goes out of his way to serve this up as a nothing-burger, hold the bun. Note his interpretation of four IT staffers stealing computer equipment from 20 House members’ offices, gaining improper access to the House server network, and Schultz shielding the ringleader, Awan: “The drama ensured Wasserman Schultz would play a central role in a murky congressional summer ‘scandal’ story playing out from Washington to Weston, her South Florida congressional district’s base.”

People are just getting emotional over this supposed illicit story! Then Caputo resorts to using the practiced shielding that has become a punchline in recent years — drawing focus away from Democrat impropriety by instead focusing on the Republican reaction to said nefarious acts:

• Republicans have seized the opportunity to pound an unpopular rival who resigned as party chair after WikiLeaks released embarrassing hacked DNC emails just before the election. Wasserman Schultz’s office said Awan wasn’t a DNC employee and didn’t have access to its internal system but some conservative commentators and media have advanced unsubstantiated claims that Awan may have had access to and then leaked the DNC emails.

That Caputo “pounced” on this tired method should state clearly how serious this scandal has become. Look at the level of avoidance he needs to reach to type these words — Wasserman was forced out of her leadership at the DNC over impropriety; she protected Awan after he and his family were dismissed over improper acts and dozens of cases of theft; she berated a Capitol Officer for investigating the issue; and Hillary Clinton even came forward to blame the condition of the DNC under Wasserman’s care as the reason she lost.

Caputo also gives Schultz air to express the fallacious charge the Awan arrest over bank fraud charges was racially motivated.

• As a mother, a Jew, and a Member of Congress, if there is one thing I know for sure, it’s this: my commitment to doing what’s right and just — even if it isn’t what’s easy and simple — is unyielding,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Undoubtedly, the easier path would have been to terminate Mr. Awan, despite the fact that I had not received any evidence of his alleged wrongdoing. Over time, the investigation raised troubling concerns for me about fair treatment, due process, and potential ethnic and religious profiling.”

What Wasserman never explains — and what Caputo fails to investigate — is if the arrest of Imran Awan was due to petty charges and “Islamophobia” why did she then fire her assistant immediately following his arrest? If all of this was over spurious charges and racial motivations would she not be driven to stand by her guy in the face of all this hate?

Like most of Debbie’s other contradictions, there appears a widening gulf between her words and her actions. And despite Politico’s attempts at erecting a Detour past this disaster even Democrats are starting to rubberneck and are noticing the wreckage.
