Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been sticking his thumb in the eye of the United States for years, but now he's got other things to worry about than whether to continue to tear down the Western alliance at the behest of Islamists. According to reports, Sanchez's wife, Begona Gomez, has been criminally charged for various corruption-related offenses, including influence peddling and embezzlement.

That comes after a years-long investigation into the matter, with Judge Juan Carlos Peinado deciding Gomez will stand trial despite her political connections.
MADRID – A Madrid Court on Monday indicted Begoña Gómez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, on four charges, including embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds.
Following a two-year investigation, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ruled that Gómez should stand trial for alleged misconduct during her tenure as co-director of two master’s programmes and a special chair at Madrid’s Complutense University, and potentially appear before a jury.
According to the court ruling quoted by national broadcaster RTVE, the judge stated that precisely because of her status as the prime minister’s wife, which benefited the expansion, funding and operations of her university chair, decisions were made that “could have been obtained through a unique exploitation of her relational position.”
A former advisor to Sanchez is also being charged with similar offenses, and there's no doubt that many will suspect the prime minister himself was aware of what was going on. He has strongly defended his wife, proclaiming her innocence and even going after the judges involved. A 2024 abuse of power complaint lodged by Sanchez was dismissed by a higher court.
Sanchez has more recently put himself front and center as an anti-American, and more specifically, anti-Trump figure. When Operation Epic Fury began, Spain denied the use of its airbases to the United States and closed its airspace to any pass-throughs. Sanchez has likewise cozied up to what's left of the Iranian regime, going so far as to reopen the Spanish embassy in Tehran amid the hostilities.
None of this is really new for him, though. This is the same guy who demanded terrorists be handed a "Palestinian state" less than two months after October 7th. Sanchez and his government have done everything they can to appease Islamists while harshly treating the Western power that actually keeps him and his country safe. Spain's military is largely a joke, having become yet another derelict NATO member that wants to dictate terms while doing none of the work.
Even as the United States has sought to push Europe away from China, Sanchez, who is a socialist, has done the opposite by calling for closer Euro-Chinese relations and further dependency on the CCP. On Monday, during a visit to the communist nation, Sanchez actually asked China to exert more influence to end the conflict and deprive Iran of nuclear capabilities. All of this while Spain benefits from U.S. military might in NATO and its protection of international waters to keep trade flowing, along with American innovation in things like the medical field, so Sanchez can keep funding his socialist utopia.
These "alliances" no longer make any sense for the United States, and certainly, this scandal involving his wife knocks Sanchez a little more off his high horse. He doesn't hold any moral ground here, and hopefully, his own people come to their senses during the next election.
