In the midst of any political debate, there's always one constant on the left. Namely, that whatever abject failures they suffer, the fault never lies with the person or policy that failed. Take communism as an example. If one dares to point out that it's an awful system of governance that inevitably devolves into murderous authoritarianism, the common retort is as predictable as it is convenient: Real communism hasn't been tried.
You see, the Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea, and the like just didn't do it right. Had they taken communism and tweaked a few bolts, utopia would have spread throughout the world, bread lines would have turned into excess, and all those genocides would have ceased to exist.
That flawed logic doesn't just extend to political ideologies, though. You also hear the same argument made about political figures who can never live up to their billing. During a recent interview, Mark Cuban went down that road, claiming that former vice president and twice-failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election to Donald Trump because she wasn't allowed to "sell" herself to the American public.
In other words, real Kamala Harris has never been tried.

CUBAN: When I was campaigning with Kamala, her biggest problem was her campaign would not let her sell. She's not a bad salesperson when you talk to her one-on-one. She's smart, she's driven, but they did everything as if it was all driven by a consultant, which it was, and you can't be that way in a world with Donald Trump.
Harris is apparently the most elusive person to ever live. She's had more political reintroductions and rebirths than could be reasonably tracked, but still, her true greatness remains cloaked. Underneath the awkward cackling and mind-numbing word salads supposedly lies a powerhouse of authenticity just waiting to be discovered. If only her dastardly campaign staff hadn't handcuffed her, we'd have gotten to see the real Kamala Harris, and it would have been a game-changer.
That's the narrative at least, and it's hardly novel. We've been hearing that the only issue with Kamala Harris is her messaging for as long as she's been in the national spotlight. When the then-vice president became the presumptive Democratic Party nominee in 2024, The New York Times blasted the headline "Harris Steps Into the Spotlight, Reintroducing Herself on Her Own Terms."
Oddly enough, for a moment, it seemed like the gambit might work. She surged in the polls, and many of her most annoying public traits, including her trademark cackle, seemed to disappear. That wasn't the "real" Kamala Harris "on her own terms," though. The real Kamala Harris is the blank-faced, lazy politician who wouldn't bother to do real prep work if her life depended on it. The rest is cope.
Fortunately for Republicans, it seems that Democrats are unlikely to realize they are deluding themselves because that would require admitting fault. Morning Consult's latest survey has Harris in the lead for the 2028 nomination. That's not to say she'll win, but she certainly seems to be in contention despite everything that has transpired.

I'll offer this advice to Democrats, though they'll undoubtedly reject it. Your policies, positions, and ideology are the problem. That is why your party's brand as a political party is in the toilet. There is no messaging tweak that will fix that. Kamala Harris doesn't need to have her umpteenth reintroduction, and communism isn't misunderstood. All of your failures are failures because of who you actually are, not because of how you are perceived.
But hey, who am I to stand in the way? If real Kamala Harris hasn't been tried, then give her another go.
