Democrats know nothing if not projection, and it looks like their "Signal-gate" talking points are going to need some updating.
As RedState reported, left-winger Jeffrey Golderg of The Atlantic was inadvertently added to a national security chat that discussed upcoming attacks on Houthi terrorists. But while those attacks went off without a hitch, Goldberg capitalized on his inclusion, publicizing it. That led to much gnashing of teeth from Democrats and the press, including calls for various administration officials to resign, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
SEE: We Need to Talk About Jeffrey Goldberg Being Added to a National Security Chat
As I said at the time, you can certainly argue this was a flub that shouldn't have occurred, and yes, NSA Mike Waltz (who added Goldberg to the chat) hasn't given the clearest of explanations. But for Democrats to demand that Hegseth resign over this was and remains laughable. Not a single official resigned in the aftermath of the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal, which saw 13 American servicemembers murdered and another seven children mistakenly droned in a grotesque attempt by the Biden administration to save face. So yeah, I don't think being forced out over a chat group that proved harmless is much cause.
There was another aspect to this story, though. As the "scandal" grew, rumblings that Biden officials actually pioneered the use of Signal for government business began to grow. Now, we have a report that appears to confirm that.
Biden administration Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Avril Haines used Signal “all the time and on her personal phone,” according to multiple career employees’ exclusive statements to the Washington Reporter.
The reports from career intelligence staffers of Haines’ use of Signal now complicates efforts by Democrats and their allies in the media to attack top national security officials in the Trump administration for utilizing the messaging app.
“She used it all the time,” one source added to the Reporter, noting that the then-DNI was using Signal “on her personal phone.” Attempts to reach Haines via phone, email, and LinkedIn were unsuccessful.
The revelation came as a shock to senior House Republicans, including several on the Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees. At least one Republican is likely to press for further answers on the matter.
Is anyone surprised? When Democrats freak out about something, it's usually a good bet they are telling on themselves. What was Haines using Signal for? Why was it on her official government phone if it's so supposedly insecure? Why did the Biden administration ever deem it acceptable to use the app if it's resignation-worthy to...use the app?
Here's my biggest issue with this story. Democrats have continually tried to make use of Signal itself as the problem. I think that's dishonest. Signal is an encrypted app. It is as secure as anything the federal government has, which is likely why Biden officials began using it. It is not AOL Messenger, no matter how many times CNN talking heads speak as if it is. So not only is it deeply hypocritical for Democrats to lambast the use of it, but it's also misleading on the facts.
The problem was adding Goldberg to the chat, and that could have happened with any platform. So whatever needs to happen to fix that should happen (and reportedly already has happened). But Democrats have no room to talk here, and they certainly shouldn't be demanding anyone resign over something the Biden administration also did.
Lastly, when Democrats do update their talking points in light of this revelation, they'll likely try to claim that Haines and others in the Biden administration weren't discussing the same types of information on Signal. I don't buy that for a second. You don't need to use an encrypted app if you aren't discussing sensitive information, especially as Director of National Intelligence.
