Bernie Sanders is big mad and he wants you to know about it. As RedState has reported in the past, Sanders has been at odds with Joe Manchin for the entirety of the negotiations over the “Build Back Better” bill. More than once, Manchin has had to demonstrate to the Vermont senator how leverage works.

Now, that the BBB bill is dead, Sanders is lashing out. He immediately sent out a letter and petition that trashed Manchin’s decision.

What gets me about what’s in this letter is how disconnected from reality it is. Sanders begins by lamenting billionaires because that’s literally all he ever talks about. He then cites the BBB bill as a solution — despite the fact that it does nothing to stop the rich from getting richer and actually includes a massive SALT tax giveaway to the ultra-wealthy. In fact, it is the single biggest line item in the bill.
This is what Democrats have been reduced to. They mumble about the rich while trying to pass legislation that helps the rich. Makes sense, right?
As the letter continues, Sanders says that Democrats are going to “take on the greed of the pharmaceutical companies.” But last I checked, it’s the left that has given those companies a complete pass in regards to the COVID-19 vaccines and wants to keep shoveling taxpayer money into their coffers. Again, the Democrats are a ball of contradictions, saying one thing while doing another.
Sanders eventually starts levying threats, suggesting that Manchin should be made to actually vote down the BBB bill so that he has to “explain” to West Virginians why they aren’t receiving a boatload of unnecessary progressive handouts. That’s silly, though. West Virginia is a deep red state. Manchin’s voters aren’t going to be upset that he didn’t further expand Medicaid or drive up the price of child-care with government subsidies. Rather, they will be largely supportive of the decision.
Lastly, Sanders gets conspiratorial, suggesting that Manchin voted down the BBB bill not out of concern for the debt and inflation, but for some other reason. Obviously, the suggestion there is that the West Virginia senator was paid off somehow. I don’t buy that, though. Manchin’s decision came down to two things: The inflationary boom we are currently in and his political future.
What Sanders’ venom tells me is that BBB is actually dead. If there was any chance of getting Manchin back to the table to pass the bill anywhere near its current form, Sanders wouldn’t be dumping on him like this. The members of the “squad” would be, but they are morons who have no sense of strategy. Sanders has previously held his tongue, trying to keep Manchin in the fold. But now that he’s shaking his fist at the clouds and yelling uncontrollably, you can ascertain that Sanders does believe this is over. Manchin has won — and there’s nothing he can do about it.
