Dr. Fauci Boards the Woke Train and Leaves No Doubt

The case of Dr. Anthony Fauci is a cautionary tale. It reminds us that there are no apolitical figures in politics, and that includes the legions of career bureaucrats, almost all of whom are on the left.

For Fauci’s part, he’s played the role of “expert” about as well as a five-year-old attempting to perform Shakespeare (see Dr. Fauci Is Left Stammering After He’s Challenged on Free States vs. Lockdown States). While always claiming impartiality and a laser focus on “the science,” he has devolved into a completely partisan actor. That started under Trump, but it is Joe Biden who has truly set Fauci free to be the left-wing hack he’s always been.

Thus, you get the doctor boarding the woke train this weekend and leaving no doubt about his desire to push certain political narratives.

This per Fox News.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said Sunday the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. “shone a bright light on our own society’s failings” in how the virus impacted minority communities.

Fauci stated that “the undeniable effects of racism” have led to unacceptable health disparities that especially hurt African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans during the pandemic…

…”Now, very few of these comorbidities have racial determinants,” Fauci said.

“Almost all relate to the social determinants of health dating back to disadvantageous conditions that some people of color find themselves in from birth regarding the availability of an adequate diet, access to health care, and the undeniable effects of racism in our society,” he continued.

Fauci’s commentary is typical of what we’ve heard from Democrats over the course of the pandemic. Claims that the virus perpetuates systemic racism have become commonplace. In this cause, Fauci’s commentary is light on facts, and heavy on intersectionalist rhetoric.

For example, at one point he blames racism for a lack of money to consume an adequate diet. Yet, that ignores the cultural differences which largely dictate dietary choices. Personal preference has a much heavier influence on obesity than a lack of money to buy healthier foods. In almost all cases, one can eat reasonably healthy for the same amount of money they can buy junk food with, which itself is not cheap.  How you cook food also has a large impact on how healthy something is or isn’t to eat.

As to access to health care, that’s a claim that needs to be substantiated. If one wants to claim systemic barriers, what are they? The United States has Medicaid for the poorest Americans and even those in the lower middle class can typically qualify for full subsidization of their health insurance costs. Are doctors and ERs turning away minorities due to racism? If they are, that should be cited with evidence, not left to the imagination as Fauci does here.

Now, perhaps Fauci could have simply argued that more education is needed on what constitutes a proper diet or how to access available healthcare, but he didn’t do that. Instead, he went straight for the woke talking point that everything is the result of “racism in our society.” That kind of thing offers no solutions and only perpetuates blame via something that can’t actually fix the problem. You know what doesn’t help people make healthier eating choices? Telling them that it’s racism that keeps them from eating well. You know what does help them? Telling people how to eat well.

Diabetes in the black community, for example, is prevalent, but it’s a disease that is brought on by a refusal to stop eating certain foods at extremely high levels. How is that racism? How is obesity racist and not the result of someone choosing to eat unhealthy, often more expensive foods? Anyone that’s priced a candy bar or a 12 pack of coke knows how high the costs are and that no one is eating that stuff simply because it’s all they can afford.

Really, though, none of that is the point because Fauci isn’t speaking out of good faith here. He’s simply repeating whatever woke talking points the Biden administration hands him because he’s a hack. He was a hack under Trump, and he’s a hack now. The bigger story here is that so many on the right defended him for so long. Trust in government bureaucrats is not supposed to be a conservative principle.
