President Trump and his wife have the coronavirus. In more normal times, to the extent those ever existed, this would be a time of well wishes. But we don’t live in normal times. Instead, the Democrats have decided that scolding people about masks is the logical response to Trump contracting a deadly disease.

Nancy Pelosi gave her first commentary since the news and it was something.

Well, unless you are illegally going to a salon in San Francisco to get your hair done, right? Then it’s fine to walk around without a mask while in close contact with someone who’s not even a family member or friend.

Turning Trump’s bad news into a political statement isn’t surprising, yet it’s still gross. Imagine if the shoe were on the other foot. Would anyone find it acceptable for a Republican to essentially suggest that the person had it coming? Of course, Trump has been wearing masks when it matters. He did not contract the virus while giving a speech on an otherwise empty stage. He likely got it from contact with one of his closest advisors, which is a risk almost everyone takes while continuing to work right now.

For Democrats it always comes back to masks though. It doesn’t matter how illogical their pronouncements are, nor does it matter that tens of thousands of people have gotten the virus in this country while presumably wearing masks. There is no science behind the idea that masks are a silver bullet that protects everyone from danger. The science gives an incredibly unclear picture, to the point where even if they offer benefit, it’s highly suspect just how much. Almost no one is walking around wearing a real N95 mask that has been proven to protect at some level. Most are wearing useless strips of improperly cleaned cloth that say right on the box they aren’t a medical device.

But none of that matters. This is all politics for Pelosi and the media who parrot her. They want to bludgeon Trump as if he could have prevented everything that’s happened. The reality is that the virus has inevitably spread to nearly everywhere on earth that it is able to environmentally survive. Europe is now seeing a large second wave, to the point where they’ve overtaken the United States in some metrics. As many have speculated, it appears all you can really do is delay the inevitable.

As to Trump’s diagnosis, it fundamentally changes nothing about the realities on the ground right now. Infections are dropping. Deaths are going way down. These are the truth of the current outbreak in the U.S. that can’t be ignored. Trump getting the virus does not suddenly mean things have changed. Pelosi and her colleagues know all this but are willing to ghoulishly use Trump’s infection against him. There are no lines anymore.
