It's Now a Racist Showing of White Privilege to Clean up Graffiti

As I wrote in my op-ed earlier today, everything is stupid and none of it is getting better.

(see Opinion: None of This Is Going to Get Better Soon)

A new video has emerged showing the heckling of people who are trying to clean up graffiti after nights of rioting. In it, we see three people minding their own business, attempting to scrub spray paint off of a building. I can’t place the location offhand, but it’s on Vermont Ave. in D.C., somewhere close to the White House.

Someone begins to video these women and eventually heckles them, accusing them of white privilege for wanting to clean up their city. Judging by the voice, the one filming is also a white woman.

When I wrote my fairly depressing piece this morning, it wasn’t because I take pleasure in opining that I do not think things are going to get better any time soon. I wrote it because everything I’m seeing tells me that the views of the woman filming this are not only widespread, but growing more pervasive by the day in our society.

Take a look around. Almost every major corporation has put out a statement in support of the current protests, but you’d struggle to find one that has denounced the rioting and looting. We are seeing videos of National Guardsmen kneeling after crowds of BLM activists demand they do so. Chants of defund the police dominate our discourse while any rational discussion about the effects of that are shouted down.

Everyone keeps waiting for things to get bad enough to cause some great awakening in these liberal bastions. There’s this idea floating around that there’s some red line. There’s not, at least not one that I’ve seen evidence of. These people are going down with the woke ship, cries of white privilege and all.

That’s how you end up with three innocent women just trying to clean up damage getting yelled at and called racists. This is our current society and culture, and it’s why divisions only seem to grow wider. People are simply retreating to their corners at this point. The nuanced discussions of reigning in police power that were happening a few weeks ago? Those are basically over, burned at the alter of rioters and instigators.

This video is incredibly depressing, but it’s reality in a lot of these cities now. If someone’s got suggestions of how to change it, I’m all ears.
