Never let a good crisis go to waste, right?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has decided to turn the crisis surrounding Wuhan coronavirus into a chance to stump for her socialist dreams. The Bernie Sanders surrogate took to Twitter to lay out a list of “emergency” measures she believes should take place, most of which have anything to do with actually stopping the spread of infections.
Right about now would be a great time to weigh emergency measures like:
– Extending Medicare/Medicaid coverage to all
– Eviction freezes
– No-strings UBI programs
– Eliminating work requirements for SNAP &other assistance
– Humanitarian provisions in prisons & decarceral policies— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) March 12, 2020
What does a universal basic income have to do with the Wuhan flu? And how in the world is offering one with “no-strings” attached a smart or sustainable strategy? This country is already running massive deficits. There is no evidence right now that a lack of healthcare coverage is hurting our ability to contain the virus. The issue is testing, and no amount of Medicaid coverage is going to make tests magically appear. Shoehorning in public option right now as an “emergency measure” would simply overwhelm the government to the point of ceasing to function. Can you imagine trying to hand tens of millions of people attempting to sign up all at once? Never mind the unbelievable cost factors associated with such.
The rest of her suggestions are nonsense as well. Work requirements for SNAP and other welfare programs are common sense. Having none simply allows abuse of the system, taking resources away from those who need it. Lastly, “eviction freezes” would be unconstitutional and a gross abuse of power. The federal government can not tell private landlords they must allow someone to live on their property without paying. That’s insanity, but this is the socialist dream, and instead of focusing on what really matters right now, the left see this as an opportunity to push their political agenda.
Laughably, here’s The Washington Post’s resident “conservative” to give her stamp of approval.

There’s nothing “sensible” about anything AOC proposed. Rubin got absolutely robbed when she came in second in Comfortably Smug’s “liberal hack tournament.”
This kind of political gamesmanship during such a tenuous time is just gross. Politicians like AOC who seek to capitalize on people dying in order to push their largely unrelated political wants should be called out for what they are doing. This is the time to work together, not suggest we turn into some utopian vision of Venezuela.
