The attacks on Attorney General Bill Barr continue to intensify, with a constant flow of op-eds and insinuations asserting he’s corrupt despite no evidence supporting that. The latest example of that comes via the push concerning Lev Parnas and Trump’s impeachment.
Parnas (make sure you click here and here for background) has been making the media circuit lately, claiming that he’s breaking his silence on Trump’s vast scheming with Ukraine to get Joe Biden. In reality, he’s just trying to save himself from the prosecution of unrelated financial crimes and that’s become more clear in how the DOJ is treating Parnas.
That issue has come to a head, as Parnas and his lawyer are calling for AG Bill Barr to recuse himself.
Lev Parnas, fresh off of last week's media tour, formally called on AG Barr to recuse himself from investigation, and to have a special prosecutor appointed from outside DOJ.

“Due to the conflict of interest of your being involved in these matters as Attorney General, and in an effort to preserve the public trust in the rule of law, we request that you recuse yourself and allow the appointment of a special prosecutor from outside the Department of Justice to handle this case,” Parnas lawyers Joseph Bondy and Stephanie Schuman said in a court filing Monday.
The attorneys cited the CIA whistleblower complaint against President Donald Trump, which asserted that Trump planned to have Barr speak with Ukrainian government officials about investigations into possible Ukrainian meddling in the 2016 election, as well into whether Joe Biden intervened to help a Ukrainian energy company linked to his son, Hunter.
Yeah, if the goal here was to brush back Barr, I’m going to guess this has the opposite effect.
Trump telling Ukraine to cooperate with the DOJ in legitimate investigations involving 2016 interference comes nowhere close to the threshold for recusal, especially since there’s no evidence Barr ever got personally involved in the matter.
Further, it blows all precedent out of the water. Loretta Lynch, despite having far more obvious conflicts of interests involving Hillary Clinton, never recused herself from the investigation of her criminal activity involving emails and classified materials. The idea that Barr should do so simply for having his name uttered within his official capacity as Attorney General is laughable.
Even the reasoning behind the requests for a recusal makes no sense. The SDNY, which is prosecuting Parnas, is not covering up Trump malfeasance at the behest of Bill Barr. The SDNY is made up of careerists that heavily skew to the left in their politics. This is the same SDNY that liberals had t-shirts made off because they put so much faith in them during the Michael Cohen saga. There’s just no way they’d sit quietly by while Barr was suppressing evidence. The media knows this, but they continue to push that idiotic conspiracy theory anyway.
But this is hardly the first time the left-wing forces that be have called for Barr to step aside. You can find numerous other recent examples here, here, and here.
The truth is, the only reason you are hearing these calls is not because there’s evidence Barr should recuse, but because he’s been so effective at cutting through the nonsense and not allowing his department to turn into a lumbering, witch hunting joke. Democrats look at the recusal of former AG Sessions and see a roadmap to stopping all accountability and allowing the careerists with an agenda to run amok. They want that again by unleashing yet another special prosecutor.
Barr isn’t going to let that happen, nor should he.
