Gov. Ralph Northam found the time between taking racist pictures and promoting infanticide to push for new gun control measures in his state of Virginia. As a result, multiple cities under his governance have declared themselves “gun sanctuaries,” refusing to enforce the new unconstitutional measures being taken. You can read more about that issue in my recent write-up on Democrats finally finding a type of sanctuary city they don’t like.
This was Virginia’s Attorney General on the matter.
“When the General Assembly passes new guns safety laws they will be enforced, and they will be followed,” Herring said in announcing the opinion. “These resolutions have no legal force, and they’re just part of an effort by the gun lobby to stoke fear.”
Actually, those resolutions do have legal force because if local law enforcement doesn’t arrest people in violation of these new laws, they become largely irrelevant.
Northam is apparently getting ready to try to do the job himself though. He’s raised the corrections budget specifically in relation to these new gun control measures. The Daily Caller has the report.
The budget bill (HB30) includes an appropriation of a quarter million dollars to carry out a host of gun control measures that Northam and his anti-gun allies hope to enact.
The $250,000 is appropriated to the Corrections Special Reserve Fund in order to provide for the “increase in the operating cost of adult correctional facilities resulting from the enactment” of Northam’s gun control measures. Among the enumerated laws that this allocation is meant to fund is a ban on commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, the criminalization of private firearms transfers, and gun confiscation orders issued without due process.
I’m sure state police going into local jurisdictions and arresting people for not observing these ridiculous new laws will go over really well.
There’s likely to be some kind of further dust-up over this, whether it be a local sheriff arrested or a mayor being threatened by state officials. Meanwhile, these new laws will do absolutely nothing to combat gun violence. Shockingly, those who want to murder people with guns already don’t observe the laws.
In the end, though, Virginians have no one to blame but themselves. Democrats ran on this stuff and are simply keeping their word. The voters had a chance in 2019 to stem the tide. Instead, they handed the General Assembly to the left based largely on the backs of votes from the ever bluer Northern region. Virginia is largely out of reach for Republicans now due to the population shifts going on.
This is what happens when you elect someone like Ralph Northam.
