Adam Schiff continues his push for impeachment apace. Over the course of the last week, he’s nearly broken into tears asserting his duty to take down Donald Trump. He’s assured us that it’s just that important to the future of this country.

Of course, the reality of the current impeachment fiasco is that it’s wholly political. Schiff has carried himself as a rabid partisan, creating rules which allowed Trump to call zero supportive witnesses while allowing selective leaks to build a chosen narrative.

Fox News’ Bret Baier recently asked a Republican how they can deny impeachment when all the witnesses agree. Baier apparently doesn’t realize that when the prosecution gets to call all the witnesses, of course they will all agree. Although, there is one witness who countered Schiff’s narrative. It just so happens that’s the one transcript the Intel Chairman refuses to release. Weird, right?

Despite his best efforts, Schiff found himself flailing this weekend, coming off a losing hand of public hearings he was certain he couldn’t lose. Comments like this were the result.

If we allow Trump’s obstruction of Congress to succeed, it will have enduring consequences.

It will mean a future Congress will be unable to conduct meaningful oversight of a president of either party.

This dude just set what little self-awareness he had left on fire.

Why? Because what this will actually mean is that Congress now has the green light to impeach over basically anything. Schiff prattles on about Republicans ruing the day, but I’d posit it’s the Democrats who will be doing the ruing. Much like nuking the judicial filibuster, sometime in the not-too-distant future, Adam Schiff will be on the other side of these antics. That’ll be a good day indeed.

The simple fact is that this impeachment push is petty and small potatoes. Some may argue what Trump did was wrong, but is it worthy of overriding an election and removing a President? Not even close in my opinion. Much of the country is looking at this and thinking it’s inside baseball, mainly because it is. Presidents have done far worse with the dual purpose of politically benefiting themselves. Does anyone think the Iran deal and shipping pallets of cash to the Mullahs was done solely for the good of the country? Heck, the media openly promoted at the time that the deal was part of “Obama’s legacy.” At no point did they decry the obvious political motivations. The initial pull out of Iraq was also blatantly political and cost lives.

Further, when Obama broke federal law by releasing five Taliban terrorists for Bowe Bergdahl, was he impeached? When he used the IRS to target conservatives, was he impeached? When Obama droned American citizens without due process, was he impeached? I must have missed those hearings. Historically, we give Presidents a lot of leeway, perhaps more than we should, but that’s the reality of it. The rules shouldn’t be changed just because Trump is in the White House.

But Schiff has changed the rules. And he and the Democrats, not Republicans, are going to rue the day they did. They’ve set an awful precedent and if the GOP has any worth at all, they’ll take advantage of it when the time comes.
