There’s self-owns and then there’s a Chris Cuomo self-own.

If you’ve been paying attention to impeachment-fest 2019, you know that an egotistical bureaucrat named David Holmes suddenly “remembered” overhearing Gordon Sondland talk to President Trump at dinner about investigations in Ukraine. Holmes managed to give a 30 minute opening statement when he was there to testify about a two minute phone exchange. Yeah, he’s that guy.

In his testimony, one of the things he claimed was that he clearly heard what Trump was saying despite the phone not being on speaker phone. This supposedly happened outdoors, at a restaurant, with everyone drinking.

But because CNN must always push the orange man bad narrative, no matter how silly or impropable, Chris Cuomo decided to try to prove this was not only probable, but common.

That led to one of the most hilarious self-owns on cable news I’ve ever witnessed. If you are thinking about skipping the video, don’t. Watch it. Trust me, it’s worth it.

In the clip, you see Cuomo, surrounded by other anchors, pull out his phone and call his mom. He then proceeds to not put the phone on speaker and hold it right up by his microphone. You know what can be heard? Absolutely nothing. He then puts the phone on speaker and you can hear it.

But not content with failing the first time, he puts it off speaker again and tries to have the anchor right next to him lean over to hear it. Even then, she can’t hear anything. At this point the rest of the panel starts laughing and saying he can’t hear it.

In one fell swoop, Cuomo proved how farcical David Holmes’ tale is. Perhaps Holmes overheard Sondland’s part of the call. Perhaps he even made out a word or two said by Trump. But the idea that he heard the entire conversation in exacting detail (yet took no notes and didn’t remember it until a week ago) is hilariously improbable. Leave it to CNN and Chris Cuomo to prove it in what was an attempt to snipe at Trump.

She's barely a foot away from the phone. Inside. Everyone is quiet. The Sondland call was outside on a terrace, and Holmes was on the other side of the table. I think we're done here.
