Christopher Steele, the super cereal spy behind the garbage fire that was the “Trump Dossier,” has some new conspiracies to peddle and he apparently doesn’t lack for sniveling bureaucrats willing to entertain them. Confirmation bias is a heck of a drug I guess…

Fresh evidence has also emerged of attempts by the Kremlin to infiltrate the Conservatives by a senior Russian diplomat suspected of espionage, who spent five years in London cultivating leading Tories including Johnson himself….

The committee’s report is based on analysis from Britain’s intelligence agencies, as well as third-party experts such as the former MI6 officer Christopher Steele…

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, but Steele always seems to be targeting the very same people the left are currently targeting. Weird, right? And now his newest workmanship is playing out in the UK exactly as his “dossier” did on this side of the pond, i.e. it’s being picked up and spread by biased media sources.

Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party has received a surge in cash from nine Russian donors, who have been named in a suppressed investigation into Russia’s attempts to undermine democracy in the UK.

The report by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee identifies close links between major donors to the Conservative party and the Russian government, the Sunday Times reports.

The report was due for publication this week but was blocked by Johnson, due to reported fears that the information would damage his chances of winning the upcoming UK general election.

I’m getting deja vu, from the “undermining democracy” cliches” to the accusations of nefarious Russian donations. It’s the same exact playbook and it’s being run as the UK approaches a major election that will decide the fate of Brexit.

Russian hysteria has reached levels so peak, that it’s essentially become another campaign slogan for any left-wing cause on earth. Every time an election happens to go the “wrong way,” it’s the Russians. You can go back to the original Brexit referendum and find fearmongering about Putin’s hand secretly machinating the voting base. In the case of Christopher Steele, he’s made a very lucrative living peddling Russian conspiracies, and because he’s faced no consequences for being so continually wrong, there’s certainly no reason for him to stop now.

This goes beyond Steele, though, as this is all clearly a semi-coordinated attempt by certain factions to gain power. Painting Russia as swinging elections allows the left to ignore that their ideas simply aren’t popular. With Brexit, there’s no logical reason why Russia should prefer Britain to leave the EU. It’s not like the EU is a military powerhouse pushing back on Putin. In fact, it’s the EU that props up much of Russia’s economy via the purchase of energy products. Even if one wants to assume Putin has a preference in the outcome, it’s certainly not shown that he actually benefits from Brexit.

Actually showing your work isn’t required in these Russian conspiracies though. To be sure, you never find much of any direct linkage or action. Instead, assumptions about indirect contacts make up the basis of almost all claims leading to the proclamation of democracy being under threat. With Trump, it was the fact that some of his associates had spoken with Russians. That’s not actually dispositive of anything, but it was used (and continues to be used) as a cudgel to muddy the waters around the President. Was Trump a secret Russian asset? Of course not, but the establishment certainly wants you to entertain the idea, lack of evidence notwithstanding. And if they can sway even a few hundred thousand voters with the narrative, a Democrat wins in 2020.

The same thing is playing out in the UK as they approach their general election. No actual coordination has been shown among any Conservatives and the Russians. But because some Kremlin-linked individuals chose to give money over the last decade to the party, we are now supposed to believe Putin is pulling the strings. If the British are smart, they’ll see this for what it is and reject the attempting influencing of their elections by political and media elites bleating the same, tired line. Unfortunately, I’m not so sure this won’t have an effect.
