Ilhan Omar Didn't Vote to Recognize the Armenian Genocide and Her Excuse Is Hilariously Nonsensical

Ilhan Omar has been laying low for a while. She’s probably under investigation for campaign finance violations given what we’ve learned the past few months concerning her affair with a a paid campaign consultant. There’s also ample evidence she committed immigration fraud by marrying her brother some years ago. Staying out of the spotlight is probably smart but sometimes she just can’t help herself.

Enter the resolution to recognize the Armenian genocide, an issue that has festered for decades within American politics as cowardly politicians refused to admit the obvious. Because Trump has recently worked with Turkey though, that finally gave Congress the courage to do something they should have done a long time ago. Anything to stick it to the orange man and all.

Omar was the only Democrat to not vote to affirm the resolution, feeding theories about her penchant for supporting Islamic dictators over allies like Israel. In fact, on the same day, Omar voted against sanctioning Turkey while at the same time supporting sanctions on the Jewish state.

Her excuse for not recognizing the Armenian genocide is just hilariously nonsensical. It’s a woke word salad.

Apparently Americans killed hundreds of millions of “indigenous people,” which is odd because nowhere near hundreds of millions of them existed. Regardless, what does deaths via war and disease within Native American population hundreds of years ago have to do with the Armenian genocide? The answer is absolutely nothing.

Would anyone here vote to not recognize the Holocaust just because the genocide inflicted on the native residents of Haiti isn’t part of the resolution? Of course you wouldn’t because that makes no sense. One is exclusive from the other and you are not downgrading one by recognizing the other. Further, the word genocide actually means something. Most Native American deaths occurred via disease and happened prior to the the United States existing. The majority of the rest died during different wars throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, some between the U.S. government. No doubt serious transgressions were committed by people like Andrew Jackson, but not everything that results in death is “genocide.” For example, when Turkey and the Kurds exchanged fire for a few days following our Northern Syria pull-out, many conservatives of a certain bent rushed to call it a genocide. It wasn’t. Again, words have meaning.

But let’s be honest. The reason Omar voted present on this resolution is because she’s got a soft spot for Islamism. I’m not going to delude myself by pretending it’s anything but that at this point. She’s spent years supporting Islamist regimes in places like Iran. She wrote letters in support of lighter prison sentences for ISIS members. She’s got deep connections to terror supporting groups like CAIR. She’s a rabid anti-Semite that never has a cross word to say about Palestinian terrorism. The evidence is pretty much in on this.

Meanwhile, Chris Hayes decided to ride in with this hot take.

Wait, what? What truth to power has she been speaking about human rights? I must have missed that between her support for Nicolas Maduro and terrorists in Somalia. MSNBC has to try to protect the precious though.

I’ll end by noting that Omar hasn’t said one word about the death of ISIS leader Al-Baghdadi. I’m sure it’s just an oversight.
