This seems fine.

Joe Biden can’t stop committing gaffes, although I question whether it’s even accurate to call making something up a gaffe. It’s probably more accurate to just say he lied.

Fox News delivers the details of this latest episode. It starts with Biden recounting that he flew into Afghanistan, through the teeth of danger, to honor a Navy Captain. The problem is that basically none of what he says is true.

According to Biden, he brushed off concerns about the risk of him traveling to the deadly area. “We can lose a vice president,” he said, recounting his words to a crowd during an event on Friday. “We can’t lose many more of these kids. Not a joke.” His story involved the captain dramatically telling Biden he didn’t want the medal because his comrade ended up dying.

But after speaking with more than a dozen military and campaign sources, the Post determined the event “never happened” and that “almost every detail in the story appears to be incorrect.”

“It appears as though the former vice president has jumbled elements of at least three actual events into one story,” the Post’s Matt Viser and Greg Jaffe wrote.

They added that Biden rattled off a slew of inaccurate facts in the span of just a few minutes.

“In the space of three minutes, Biden got the time period, the location, the heroic act, the type of medal, the military branch and the rank of the recipient wrong, as well as his own role in the ceremony,” Viser and Jaffe wrote.

Biden has a habit of this, and I’m not talking about his habit of making things up or forgetting where he is. I’m talking about him continually painting himself as being much more than he actually was as Vice President. We saw it with his ludicrous descriptions of dealing with Ukraine, where he presented himself as levying threats and getting things done, as if he actually had the power to make any decisions without Obama’s approval. Here, Biden inserts himself as a would be war hero, risking his own life to do well by a service member. In the end, his story comes off as simply using the military as pawns to promote how great he is, and that’s a problem even without the inaccuracies.

Of course, the inaccuracies are also a problem. When nearly every detail in a story turns out to be wrong, that doesn’t say a lot about Biden’s current mental capacity. He’s either really bad at lying or he’s honestly mixing up details and events to a striking degree. Neither is good.

At least he didn’t claim to be dodging sniper fire like a certain past Democrat nominee, so he has that going for him.
