Iceland Turns to Nazi-Style Eugenics

There’s a fair bit of irony in CBS, who would no doubt vehemently denounce any strain of Nazism if asked directly, giving a fluff headline like this to a textbook case of nazi-esque eugenics.

Geneticist Kari Stefansson is the founder of deCODE Genetics, a company that has studied nearly the entire Icelandic population’s genomes. He has a unique perspective on the advancement of medical technology. “My understanding is that we have basically eradicated, almost, Down syndrome from our society — that there is hardly ever a child with Down syndrome in Iceland anymore,” he said.

Holy freaking bad logic Batman. Well, yeah, you’ve nearly eradicated it because you kill nearly every child in the womb who is diagnosed with it. Iceland has now reached the level of medical prowess Adolf Hitler had. Congrats.

To be fair to this doctor, he goes on to say  that such a heavy handed approach is not desirable.

“It reflects a relatively heavy-handed genetic counseling,” he said. “And I don’t think that heavy-handed genetic counseling is desirable. … You’re having impact on decisions that are not medical, in a way.”

Stefansson noted, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with aspiring to have healthy children, but how far we should go in seeking those goals is a fairly complicated decision.”

It’s really not complicated at all. Advances in modern medicine have produced a world where 80% of children with Down Syndrome live 60 years or more. Given that statistic is based on people born back in the mid-20th century, you can realistically expect children born in the last few decades to live much longer as well.

Most of us probably know a child with Down Syndrome. They are some of the happiest, most loving children in existence. They aren’t suffering. In fact, most children with Down Syndrome are only mildly stunted in mental ability. Most grow up to hold jobs and while their lives may not be “normal,” that’s not an indication of their worthiness to have it.

Aborting a child with Down’s Syndrome is no more moral than aborting a child because they aren’t the right gender (yep, I just used that word to mean what it actually means) or are going to be born mixed race. This kind of genetic engineering is right out of 1930/40’s Germany. In fact, one of the cornerstone’s of Nazism was Eugenics as a way to sustain their perfect, socialist society (another article for another day).

Over at Landspitali University Hospital, Helga Sol Olafsdottir counsels women who have a pregnancy with a chromosomal abnormality. They speak to her when deciding whether to continue or end their pregnancies. Olafsdottir tells women who are wrestling with the decision or feelings of guilt: “This is your life — you have the right to choose how your life will look like.”

She showed Quijano a prayer card inscribed with the date and tiny footprints of a fetus that was terminated.

Quijano noted, “In America, I think some people would be confused about people calling this ‘our child,’ saying a prayer or saying goodbye or having a priest come in — because to them abortion is murder.”

Olafsdottir responded, “We don’t look at abortion as a murder. We look at it as a thing that we ended. We ended a possible life that may have had a huge complication… preventing suffering for the child and for the family. And I think that is more right than seeing it as a murder — that’s so black and white. Life isn’t black and white. Life is grey.”

This is just delusional. What you think of something doesn’t dictate the reality of it (although in 2017, 50% or so of the country will argue that point). Aborting a child with Down Syndrome is not just “a thing that we ended.” You killed a child for no other reason than they may not meet some arbitrary standard of mental ability and physical appearance.

As society hurdles toward a cliff on many issues, this stuff seems to be becoming more common. We just spent months debating whether a parent even has the right to attempt to treat their sick child in Britain. Europe, as per usual, are taking this disgusting leap first, but don’t kid yourself that the US are immune. 67% of children with Down Syndrome in the US are aborted when diagnosed and it’s disturbing how many American liberals supported the British government in the case of Charlie Gard.

Since everyone wants to talk about Nazis, let’s talk about Nazis. This kind of stuff is textbook 1920s Progressive eugenics which later morphed into what we saw in Nazi Germany. States such as Oregon have gone off the deep end with assisted suicide and state-sponsored, elective abortion. The movement toward that is only growing as it becomes nearly universally accepted in Europe.

Conservatives can keep focusing on mostly meaningless, petty political issues, or we can start focusing our energy on things that matter far more. This is an issue that needs to be widely debated, publicized, and then fought against with everything we’ve got.

Allowing this to continue to fly under the radar is not acceptable. The media are not going to do anything but play along and attempt to normalize this new-age barbary. If you’ve spent the last two years asserting your morality in the face of modern politics, well here you go. Here’s an issue you need to be involved in that strikes at the heart of all of us. Support pro-life groups, speak out, give money and/or give your time. The most difficult issues often require the most work.
