Taking Care of Our Heroes: Trump Announces Military Spouse Commission in Oval Office Ceremony

Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday establishing the President's Military Spouse Commission, which will advise him on how to improve the lives of the partners and families of those who serve.

He held a signing celebration in the Oval Office surrounded by military spouses, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, among others. Hegseth’s wife Jennifer will chair the commission.

Trump:

Thank you all for being here as we take a major, new step to support our incredible military families, something that we've been working on for a long time. I guess you could say, for decades, there's never been anything like this.

Today, I'm signing an executive order to establish the first-ever presidential Military Spouse Commission.
…The commission will... include the spouses of our wonderful service secretaries, the spouses of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the spouses of their senior enlisted leaders. And we have some incredible talent, and I’ll tell you, these spouses — I looked at [them] educationally and every other way — they're amazing.

He added that the fight for our security starts right here at home:

“America cannot have the strongest military in the world without the love and devotion of our remarkable military spouses, who make extraordinary sacrifices for our country.”

The Commission will report to the president and keep him updated on the difficulties facing military spouses, including childcare, employment, housing, healthcare, education and the demands of multiple deployments. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, his wife Christie, and each military branch's senior leader will serve on the panel

“The fight to support our service members is not just abroad, it’s also right here at home," Mullin said.

Even if a spouse is off in foreign lands, life back home has to continue, and it’s not always easy:

It released a poll last year that labor participation among active-duty spouses has increased from 59% in 2020 to 71% in 2024, while unemployment remains high at 23%.
The poll also found that 77% of military families say they need two incomes to make ends meet.
In addition, 64% of military spouses cited the cost and availability of child care as a barrier to finding employment, with 39% relying on babysitters, while 35% use off-base child care.
Roughly 1 million children have at least one parent serving on active duty, according to Military One Source, a government website.

Jennifer Hegseth says she knows full well about what the families face, because not only has she been one, but she’s been researching the issue:

I spent the last year traveling around, meeting with military spouses and families around the world and around the country, and it's the same from Kentucky to Singapore. It's housing, it's healthcare, it's employment, it's childcare, it's education. We're going to take a look at all those things."

If we don’t take care of our heroes, those actively serving as well as those supporting them, we endanger our security. It sure is nice to see a president addressing these issues instead of extreme gender ideology, isn’t it?
