Watch your six, because the Thought Police will soon be coming for you.
Now, a group of around 13 plaintiffs, including Catholic healthcare providers and multiple congregations of nuns, is claiming that a new assisted suicide law in New York State signed and endorsed by Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul would force them to choose between violating the tenets of their faith or giving up their longtime practice of caring for the sick, elderly and the terminally ill (often for free). The third option would be to ignore the law altogether and potentially be subject to heavy fines or license revocation, an obvious non-starter.
But these nuns are pushing back hard, and they’re taking the Empire State to court.

According to the lawsuit, the measure would force them to counsel those seeking assisted suicide — and even refer them to “providers.” The issue here isn’t even whether assisted dying is a good idea; it’s that these nuns would be forced to throw out their beliefs and everything they stand for:
The law works in tandem with an existing New York statute, the Palliative Care Information Act, which requires doctors and nurse practitioners to inform terminally ill patients of all their end-of-life options. Now that assisted dying is one of them, medical professionals must proactively raise it with patients—whether or not the patient asks.
“Everyone is made in the image and likeness of God, and there is a dignity about the human person,” Mother Marie Edward told The Free Press, the outlet founded by now-CBS News head Bari Weiss after she quit The New York Times over its "illiberal" culture. “We are only the guardians of this body. We do not take the charge of whether or not we live or we die. That’s up to God.”
In addition to putting the nuns in an unsolvable dilemma, one of the attorneys for the plaintiffs argues that the law basically promotes suicide:
Mark Rienzi, president of Becket, who is representing the Carmelite Sisters, the Dominican Sisters, the Benedictine Sisters, and the Little Sisters of the Poor, as well as Bishop John O. Barres and the Diocese of Rockville Centre, said in a statement that, "New York is forcing sick and dying people to consider suicide at their lowest moment, regardless of whether they ask for it or not."
"Worse, it’s conscripting the nuns who care for them into its suicide cult on pain of crushing fines and professional ruin," Rienzi added. "That is both unconscionable and unconstitutional. We’re confident the federal courts will put a stop to it."
Whenever someone tries to force you by law to go against your religious beliefs or do something that defies logic, it’s not usually a Republican behind the power play, despite what they tell you.
All too often these days, it’s a “progressive” who wants to tell you how to think and coerce you into acting in tandem with their worldview, regardless of how different it may be from your own.
