They Call Themselves 'Skywalkers': Masked Empire State Building Daredevils Revealed

I thought I was being pretty inventive and daring 30 years ago this month when I hid a ring in my wetsuit and proposed to my bride thirty-five feet underwater while SCUBA diving in Jamaica. I figured she had to say yes. Accidents can happen while diving.

But a daredevil climber has got me beat (albeit in an extremely dangerous and illegal fashion) by climbing with his lady love to the top of the Empire State Building. Upon descent, he pulled out a ring and proposed on a platform high in the sky, as we reported earlier Wednesday.

She said "yes."

The first question observers wanted an answer to was, who the heck were these insane risk-takers? Now we have an answer, and it turns out, they’re regulars at this sort of thing:

🔥🚨 BREAKING — The couple seen atop the Empire State Building have been IDENTIFIED as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus.

The couple released a Netflix documentary in 2024 called "Skywalkers: A Love Story."

They supposedly " Found Love Thousands of feet in the sky, illegally scaling the world’s tallest buildings."

I hope she never tries to climb in those boots.

The “Skywalkers” have pulled off huge stunts before:

It’s unclear how, exactly, Beerkus and Nikolau were able to scale the 102-story building, but if “Skywalkers” is any indication, the duo probably spent months training for the stunt. Documenting their climb of Malaysia’s 2,227-feet-tall Merdeka Tower — the second-tallest structure in the world — Beerkus and Nikolau filmed themselves spending roughly 30 hours inside the building, camping out and hiding from construction workers. After pulling off the climb, Beerkus and Nikolau escaped Malaysia before they could face legal repercussions.

They even have their own Netflix documentary. I’m not necessarily scared of heights, but I admit to getting queasy just watching these two in action.

Here’s the moment that surprised everyone watching. Although what they did was illegal and dangerous and put first responders in a terrible spot, they will admittedly have one of the most dramatic engagement photos ever.

They may have been planning this stunt for a long time, seeing as they told Variety in a 2024 interview that they had just moved to New York and were looking for new heights. There were buildings they hadn’t “conquered,” they said, "but we can’t tell you what they are.”

They have been taken into NYPD custody, but it’s unclear what consequences they’ll presumably be facing. I’m just glad that they didn’t fall to a horrible death or injure innocent people.
