Wednesday is debate night here in California, as six candidates — none of them named Eric Swalwell — will battle it out at 10 pm. ET (7 pm PT).
Billionaire former hedge fund manager Tom Steyer will be there, the man who was unable to gain any ground in the 2020 presidential race despite spending a staggering $340 million of his own money. To show you how popular he was, that represented 98.92 percent of his total fundraising.
But he’s back, already spending an estimated $115 million in the gubernatorial race, and we haven’t even gotten to the primary yet. Meanwhile, he’s busy preaching open rebellion against the federal government and pushing loony environmental schemes. Somehow, however, following the crash and burn of Swalwell's political career, he now finds himself near or at the top of many polls.
Someone needs to work on his messaging, however. We received this flier today, where Steyer seems to forget that many Californians are still recovering from the effects of the January 2025 wildfires, which were among the most destructive in the state’s history and basically erased Pacific Palisades and Altadena off the map.
Way to empathize, Tom:

The flier goes on to make some, ahem, questionable claims. He did all this, despite never having served in public office?
2010 - Defeated Big Oil companies that pollute our air and water.
2012 - Closed a tax loophole on out-of-state corporations and forced them to pay their fair share.
2016 - Beat Big Tobacco and made smokers, not taxpayers, pay for tobacco-related health care costs.
2019 - Mobilized 8 million people to force Congress to vote to impeach.
What he’s talking about is his backing for campaigns he led or financed, especially California ballot initiatives, but he has never signed a law in his life. He’s just got a lot of money to throw around.
Here’s more of what he envisions. I have taken the liberty of adding my own comments in brackets:
Now, Tom's running for Governor because he knows Californians are getting crushed by skyrocketing costs and a broken government [100 percent true. We suffer under a state government that has been a one-party dominated extremist Democrat regime since 1996. You would only bring more of the same, Mr. Steyer.] No one running for Governor has delivered results for as long — or for as many Californians — as Tom has. [That might actually be true, because none of the other Democrats running have much to brag about. Throwing potatoes over your ex-husband’s head is not a political victory]. He's the only candidate with a history of taking on the big corporations and special interests and beating them. [Yes, and he is so principled that his former hedge fund once invested almost $100 million in ICE facilities and private prisons. Now he says he will “Put ICE agents in jail & “treat them like the mob.” Hypocritical much?]
He goes on to make all sorts of pie-in-the-sky promises, like he’ll build one million new homes, ban corporate PAC money, cut electric bills by 20 percent (with your extremist environmental views, Tom? Not likely), expand universal pre-school, make community college free, and all sorts of other giveaways. I’m surprised he didn’t just say, “I’ll give everyone who votes for me five dollars!”
And yet he says he’ll lower costs. Fat chance.
"Fight fire with fire," ugh. He should have just gone with “Torch the Golden State even further with Tom!”
